Great comfort food location. We came in at 8:53 and they still served us, which we appreciated so much. The service was extremely quick and we got our food within 5 minutes of ordering! We got tea and two udons which were delicious. Would definitely come again! Seemed like a nice atmosphere for more intimate conversations too! Not too loud.
A delicious variety and large portions of hot and cold udons, and lots of choices for delicious appetizers and drinks as well! My party of 4 signed in on a waitlist and was told we’d need to wait about an hour but it ended up being closer to 30 mins. Thankfully there were a lot of cool stores to check out in the surrounding area! After we ordered, our food was brought out very quickly and we were surprised at the size of the dishes didn’t even order large! I would highly recommend the Mentai Cream Sauce Udon if you like the taste of seafood, or Niku Udon if you want a warm, soup based meal. There are also combination dishes like the oyakodon that have rice. I also enjoyed the agedashi tofu and tempura, which are tasty shareable appetizers! I’d happily visit again the next time I’m in SF, and will recommend to anyone wanting to visit Japan Town!
udon mugizo, hands down best udon i've ever had! forgot what it was called, maybe mentai cream sauce udon? had cod roe, parmesan, green onions, crunchy tempura bits and seaweed? it looked good with all the colors, but was tasty AF!!!! light flavor i cannot describe??? with all the mouth feels, crunchiness of the tempura bits, and the soft chewy udon noodles. so hard to describe. the bowl looked like a big plate. after my first bite, it was so good, i thought ugh this isn't enough food. i was wrong it was the perfect amount. more on this later. friends had the salmon spinach udon, i would say equally delicious!! i only had a little taste of this. need to go back for that! kids had donburi, it came with a small bowl of udon. dunno what those guys were thinking, but they missed out. kids didn't eat their udon noodles so i took those noods and put them into the leftover sauce from my udon...haha had to undo the belt a lil. so good. coming back. photos don't do it justice. fave. udon. place.
It has been a while since the last time we were here! We came back just before our trip back home : We just don’t want to miss it! We ordered a few dishes of appetizers and we both ordered Mentai as our main course because it is too good and we don’t want to share :D Our server is great and very attentive as well! She always checked in with us and made sure everything is alright! Her name is June! Great service and recommendation : The ambience is great, not so crowded outside as they have a waiting list system and you can walk around and come back when the table is ready! Quite convenient! The music is not too loud too! We love it here overall! : Thanks June for your great service as well! We’ll come back for more!
Love the udon. Perfect simple lunch meal on relaxing Sunday. Went there around 1pm so not too crowded. Portion is not to large for Asian stomach. The fried vegetable is rather hard and ordinary. This located on 2nd floor Japan TownFood: 4/5
Came here early and the servers were friendly. I got the mentai cream udon. They are great!! Never got these in the US before. I definitely think they are on the salty side but it’s still amazing! The environment is okay, not very crowded :Food: 5/5
Busy udon place but great service! Other than udon, which they are of course good at, all the fried items are made to perfection, may they be tempura or agedashi tofu. The marinated egg in the udon is so amazing that I need to keep for last. I still haven't tried their specialties like mentaiko udon so that will be the next item I will get next time I eat here. Note that the price of the dishes here is quite reasonable compared to the amount of food you got. I feel stuffed by the time I finished the whole bowl.
When we got on the waitlist at the restaurant around 6pm, it says eta was 40+ minutes. But it only took us about 25 minutes to get seated. The foods were served fast. They have many creative udon dishes that all look pretty good. The udon noodles were okay but the soup/sauce for dried noodles and toppings were very flavorful.
I really enjoyed the food at Udon Mugizo! I wanted something light and got the Niku Udon. The noodles tasted great and were homemade. The texture was really nice. I also enjoyed the broth which was well flavored and not too heavy. We put our name on the waitlist when we arrived and waited around half an hour for a table for two. There's a lot of cute spots around the restaurant so highly recommend exploring after you've checked in at the restaurant.
As a lover of both udon and rice bowls, I opted for the Rice Bowls Combo, which featured the beef donburi—sweet and tender beef and onions over rice with benishouga and green onion. 1. Beef Donburi: The beef in this dish was a revelation. It was perfectly seasoned, tender, and bursting with flavor. Paired with the rice, it created a harmonious balance that left me craving more. The benishouga pickled ginger and green onions added a delightful crunch and tanginess. 2. Mini Udon: The mini udon was a simple yet comforting bowl of goodness. The clear broth was light and soothing, and the chewy noodles were a testament to traditional udon craftsmanship. I also tried the Mentai Cream Sauce Udon. This signature dish is a departure from the ordinary. 3. Mentai Cream Sauce: Imagine a creamy, umami-packed sauce infused with seasoned cod roe. It's bold, unexpected, and utterly addictive. The parmesan cheese adds richness, while the green onions and kaiware sprouts provide a fresh contrast. And those tempura bits add crunch and depth to every bite.
