Newest addition to Depasquale's Ventures, Umbria brings an intriguing mix of high-quality steak and sushi rolls to the North End dining scene. Recently came here for Christmas dinner. The overall experience didn’t entirely live up to the high expectations set by Frank’s emphasis on hospitality, but it was better than we anticipated from its mixed reviews. We started off our meal with the Steak Tartare and the Maryland Crab Cakes. The tartare was subtly seasoned, allowing the natural richness of the beef to shine through. This minimalist approach might not be everyone's preference, but I found it quite appealing. The crab cakes were not as crispy as desired, but it was still solid. However, the service after the appetizers slowed down noticeably. Our subsequent courses, the Lobster Dumplings and Umbria Roll, took over 45 minutes to arrive, with no updates from the staff during the wait. The iconic dumplings, unfortunately, left an unpleasant medicinal aftertaste. The Umbria Roll, though slightly pricey, redeemed the situation somewhat with its combination of salmon roe and lobster tempura. The highlight of the meal was undoubtedly the Bone-in Cowboy Rib Eye. As advertised, this wet-aged steak boasted a rich and bold umami flavor and tender texture. It was one of the best ribeyes I had in Boston, and the Umbrian Demi on the side complemented the steak nicely with its sweetness and tanginess. With many good local steakhouses in the city, Umbria didn’t quite live up to Frank’s ambition of bringing the best steakhouse in Boston. The lack of focus on hospitality, which could have been a distinguishing factor, was particularly noticeable and disappointing. While their steak might draw me back, I would be hesitant to explore much beyond that in their menu.
My wife and I were looking for the perfect place to have Christmas Eve dinner. We’ve been wanting to try Umbria as we walked by many times while it was under construction. As you can tell by the 5 star rating, we were not disappointed! We started with a round of drinks consisting of Pinot Grigio for my wife, and espresso martini for me. Both were excellent. The martini was as strong as every other bar in the city so they don’t skimp on the alcohol content. For appetizers we ordered the crab cakes which were served 3 on a plate with a dressing I could not quite pinpoint however it was delicious. Not fishy at all, and a generous amount of crab meat. They were small but filling. For our entire we chose the Tomahawk Steak, medium, and a la carte double mashed potatoes and asparagus. The steak was possibly the best I’ve ever had, cooked to perfection, juicy, tender, and at 36oz was perfect for two people. The sides were also more than enough for both of us. For dessert, my wife had the crème brûlée, and I had the triple chocolate cake, both were amazing! The service was second to none, attentive friendly, and prompt with all of our requests which is amazing in itself as the restaurant was packed. Yes, it was pricey, but this is Boston and you get what you pay for. Our meal including tip came to $500+ So be prepared, especially if you have more than a party of two. The restaurant has 4 bars, and is upscale. While jackets are not required, I would suggest you don’t show up in jeans and sneakers. You will stand out like a sore thumb! All in all, I highly recommend Umbria for your special day, or if you just want a great night out.
My wife and I visited this steakhouse for the first time the other night, and our experience was nothing short of amazing. From the moment we pulled up and utilized the valet service, we knew we were in for a treat. The transformation they have achieved with the space is truly remarkable, bringing a refreshing modern touch to the North End area. The highlight of our evening was undoubtedly the food. The quality and flavor of the dishes were absolutely fantastic, leaving us thoroughly impressed. Each bite was a delightful explosion of culinary expertise. The attention to detail in the preparation and presentation was evident, and it truly elevated the dining experience. In addition to the stellar food, our server was exceptional. They were attentive, knowledgeable, and provided impeccable service throughout the night. Their ability to anticipate our needs and offer helpful recommendations added an extra layer of enjoyment to our evening. Overall, our visit to this steakhouse was a memorable one. The combination of outstanding food, attentive service, and the modern ambiance made for an unforgettable dining experience. We highly recommend it to anyone looking for a top-notch steakhouse in the North End area.
First time dining here. Was a great experience, we received a super tasty welcome dessert at the end of our meal which was a great surprise Inside had a great vibe, servers were very knowledgeable about the menu. Although the stalls in the restroom are almost see thru, you can fully see the person next to you
Had a fantastic dinner here tonight. All the food was great, especially the creamed spinach and the chocolate layer cake. Carlos was exceptional! One of the best servers we’ve ever had in the city!! He had a wonderful personality, very attentive and great recommendations.Food: 5/5
Absolutely my new favorite place to eat in the North End. Possibly the best food I have ever had. Our server, Roxanne, was incredible and all-around service was superb. It's not that typical jammed-in seating like many restaurants in the North End. I highly recommend this modern, A+ restaurant.Food: 5/5
Absolutely love visiting Umbria! Their espresso martini is truly to die for, and the steak was prepared exactly how I like it. Larry, our waiter, was exceptional!Food: 5/5
Recently dined at Umbria for Boston Restaurant week and am sad to say I was disappointed. The food was just average, nothing particularly memorable. Where I truly docked stars, however, was the excruciatingly slow service and the incredibly loud atmosphere. We waited for over 30 minutes just to have our drink order taken, and I could hardly hear my friends over the music and the noise from other tables. Considering the price, I wouldn't recommend at all.
The food was not that great. Somewhat acceptable... great location. We had a reservation, but I came in a little late. The front desk could not figure out which table to take/direct me. 3 staff members at the front desk just looking at each other spaced out. So I just had to call my co-worker to figure it out, and she had to come up and meet me at the front desk to get me. There's much better service/food elsewhere.
The food was acceptable, but I believe the overall experience did not justify the price of over $100 per person. We experienced significant delays in placing our orders, as our table seemed to be frequently overlooked. After waiting over 20 minutes to order dessert, we asked for the check instead, but no one came to our table. Ended up going to the front desk to pay. This level of service, especially in a high-priced dining establishment, was disappointing.
