Story

Welcome to United First Parish Church's Facebook Page. We are a Unitarian Universalist congregation. Since 1636, this congregation has been home to an enduring tradition of liberal religion and a deeply held belief in social justice.

Worship Services are held Sundays at 10:30 a.m. from the Sunday after Labor Day until Mid-June. Services include music, readings, and a sermon by our minister, guest speaker or a member of the congregation. Our readings and sermons draw from Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu and Buddhist spiritual writings, literature and poetry. During the summer, congregation-led services are held in the parish hall.

After services, coffee and refreshments are served in the parish hall. Newcomers are especially welcome and are encouraged to come and ask questions.

We are a Welcoming Congregation.

My tween daughter and I visited here on July 7 while also visiting the Adams National Historical Park across the street. 1. To begin with - the crypt is downstairs. First there is a presentation in the church which describes (in my humble opinion) in a bit too much detail every last bit of information of how the church was constructed. 2. After that you walk down the stairs into the crypt and see a very beautiful Adams burial site for President John and First Lady Abigail and President John Quincy and First Lady Louisa. 3. There are three American flags. a. As requested by himself, the one over John's coffin is the one from his time period b. As requested by himself, the one over John's Quincy's coffin is the one from his time period c. Right outside - at the gate going into the crypt - there is a modern American flag. 4. I asked the guide if there was ever a time when the flags were not displayed (as noted in several reviews found here) and she said, "Certainly not - this is a Presidential burial ground. We always display the flag proudly and also have the two earlier American flags over the coffins." The tour took about 20 minutes; I recommend the stop.

It is unfortunate one is required to be chaperoned in order to gain access to the Adams crypt. If you want to skip the full tour you can try to catch the end of the tour when the crypt is shown. They do ask for a donation but it was not required. Once inside the crypt they do give you all the time you need to take photos and/or have a moment of silence. Besides having to wait until the end of the next tour to gain access to the crypt I enjoyed the experience.

Put up an American flag. Or stop advertising John Adams a founder of our nation. You are very unamerican.

The only reason I am giving this one star is because I can't give it zero stars. It is absolutely criminal that a private concern holds access to a national treasure such as 2 presidential graves and refuses to allow access to the graves unless money is given to the concern. I have been to every presidential grave in the country and every time I have asked if I can take a picture of the grave without taking the tour the answer has always been "yes." Not so with this place. I am glad I had already taken my picture a few years ago but when I went with my son this summer to show him the graves, they have imposed a required $4 fee and a 30 min tour. Absolutely criminal to highjack a national treasure with a required contribution to a supposed religious organization. Money hungry creeps.
