Story

The U.S. Post Office, also known as the Berkeley Main Post Office, has been described as a "free adaptation of Brunelleschi's Foundling Hospital." Designed in the Second Renaissance Revival style, the front of the building features terra cotta arches supported by plain tuscan columns. The building, located, 2000 Allston Way Berkeley, California, was built in 1914-15.The Post Office is within the Civic Center Historic District, a five block area listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The district is a locally significant ensemble of harmoniously planned civic buildings that retains a high degree of integrity since achieving significance in 1950. The post office, along with the "Old" City Hall (1909) in the Beaux-Arts style, is among the earliest and the most decorative of the thirteen buildings in the district. The architect is unknown but Oscar Wenderoth is listed on the cornerstone as he was director of the Office of the Supervising Architect that designed this and many other federal government buildings. The floor space doubled with the completion of the annex in 1932. A few years later, the Treasury Relief Art Project commissioned a sculpture and a mural for the lobby. Both are well-preserved examples of the styles, subjects and dominant themes of New Deal Art. The post office was designated Berkeley Landmark No. 38 on June 16, 1980 by the Landmarks Preservation Commission and added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 29, 1981.

This rating could soon change to a 1. I registered for a post office box online, paid for my three months of rental, okay. Simple enough. I knew I'd need to go to the location to pick up my keys after showing identification. Nowhere online did it say to check about the availability of a postal clerk to issue your keys. I drive 20 minutes out of my way, pay Berkeley's premium parking prices for an hour because I know what to expect - long lines, slow service, poor service - but I was happy that the desk was open on a Saturday. After standing in line for way too long, I'm informed that the person who can issue keys only works Monday through Friday, 9-5. I plan on calling on Monday to figure out if there's a way to do all the verification with her through some other means to pick up my keys, but otherwise I'm demanding a full refund. The point of a PO box to me has always been the extended accessibility to it outside of working hours. No way am I taking a day off of work just to do this! I'll take my business elsewhere, to a local store providing private mailboxes. Not worth the hassle!

Long lines, only 2 people working windows. Went there to renew my passport at 12:03pm. Only person trained went out to lunch. Went back at 115pm, person was still not back. Told I should come back later? Not customer service focused. Attitude of worker at window, sucked.

My package from Berkeley to Stanford was delivered to the wrong address and lost. I called the hotline but it was extremely difficult to connect to a human. Finally, I had to search on Google how to press keys to connect to a human. After 16 minutes of awful ads, I was connected, But the operator was full of cliches and told me that they would investigate it and call me back and e-mail me in one business day. But three months passed and no reply. They are good at stealing packages and lying, but not delivery. Update: I was returning a book bought on Amazon and it might be the seller lying that the book was not delivered.

Always a VERY long wait and employees are extremely slow and have poor use of language. While I was standing at the counter waiting, a person next to me tried to pay for his shipping with a $20 bill. The USPS employee said, "Don't you got a credit card? I ain't got none change." I was trying to mail an international package and was told "We don't have any more customs forms." I asked when they would get them. "No idea." The ONLY thing to recommend this post office is the mailing kiosk because it doesn't require human interaction. But only limited services can be accomplished there.
