Mission

UCLA's primary purpose as a public research university is the creation, dissemination, preservation and application of knowledge for the betterment of our global society. To fulfill this mission, UCLA is committed to academic freedom in its fullest terms: We value open access to information, free and lively debate conducted with mutual respect for individuals, and freedom from intolerance. In all of our pursuits, we strive at once for excellence and diversity, recognizing that openness and inclusion produce true quality. These values underlie our three institutional responsibilities.

Learning and teaching at UCLA are guided by the belief that undergraduate, graduate and professional school students and their teachers belong to a community of scholars. This community is dedicated to providing students with a foundational understanding of a broad range of disciplines followed by the opportunity for in-depth study in a chosen discipline. All members of the community are engaged together in discovering and advancing knowledge and practice. Learning occurs not only in the classroom, but also through engagement in campus life and in communities and organizations beyond the university.

Discovery, creativity and innovation are hallmarks of UCLA. As one of the world's great research universities, we are committed to ensuring excellence across a wide range of disciplines, professions and arts while also encouraging investigation across disciplinary boundaries. In so doing, UCLA advances knowledge, addresses pressing societal needs and creates a university enriched by diverse perspectives where all individuals can flourish.

Civic engagement is fundamental to our mission as a public university. Located on the Pacific Rim in one of the world's most diverse and vibrant cities, UCLA reaches beyond campus boundaries to establish partnerships locally and globally. We seek to serve society through both teaching and scholarship, to educate successive generations of leaders, and to pass on to students a renewable set of skills and commitment to social engagement.

UCLA endeavors to integrate education, research and service so that each enriches and extends the others.

This integration promotes academic excellence and nurtures innovation and scholarly development.

Wish I could study here, guys apply to UCLA today if your planning on studying abroad. It’s a great university with everything state of the art that students need. Campus is huge with even bigger classy buildings and class rooms. Very safe to be in the campus and very friendly staff.

Overrated and overblown university that is out of touch with today's reality. Many UCLA students and staff here feel very entitled when they shouldn't. Others feel like they are above the law and everyone else like the three Bruin basketball players who were charged for shoplifting in China. This school is very greedy, and doesn't mind increasing their tuition, fees, and other costs at the student's expense while at the same time increasing the salaries of their staff. Also, they love rich foreign students because many end up paying a lot of money while they go here, to the point that nationals have a hard time. Also, the school has outgrown Westwood, to the point that student housing is an issue and streets are in poor condition and buildings are an eye sore, so it should really look forward to moving its campus somewhere else!

Truly a unique experience here. Not only is it world renowned for academics, but the student culture here is amazing as well. Many great and interesting people to be met here, and there is a very strong philanthropic sense and social justice tendencies here. Genuinely a unique experience to be had.

We checked into the Royal Palace Westwood on a Thursday evening, after a Lyft ride from Disneyland, and we spent Friday walking around the UCLA Campus and Westwood. We checked out on Saturday morning and took a short ride to LAX via Lyft. The hotel was a great value and included a modest buffet breakfast; the WiFi cut out a few times so I used my own hotspot. Our room was light and airy thanks to a sliding glass door onto a balcony overlooking a quiet side-street. The room was quiet with the door shut and on Friday morning we slept late, the day before at Disney having been a long one. At UCLA, we were surprised and disappointed to find the Botanical Gardens closed for maintenance work. As we made our way to the Sculpture Garden, we stopped in at the Charles Young Research Library and had a coffee. Back out in the Sculpture Garden we asked a kindly gentleman the way to the Fowler Museum and, very generous with his time, he took us to it. It developed that he was a UCLA grad and he worked in Admissions there. His kindliness made a huge impression of UCLA on us. The Fowler is worth a long visit; ours was a bit too short as we needed to get to the Ackerman Union for lunch at Wolfgang Puck Express. The rest of the day was spent in Westwood, including window shopping, and some trying a few things on and visiting the Hammer Museum. For the evening, the Geffen Playhouse was sold out, the Fox theater was showing a movie we had already seen, but we managed to get the last 3 seats at the iPic for a new film, and it was well worth it and a unique experience. Afterward we walked around looking at our options for dinner, which were several, and settled on the Napa Valley Grille. The fare was great. The bartender mixed up some drinks and they ended up scratching them from the tab, without a peep from us. This was a fun day. On our next visit we will aim to schedule an organized tour as there is clearly a lot more to see and do here, including the libraries, student facilities, and architecture of the original campus buildings.
