The vast vistas of the Southwest comprise seemingly endless scenery, landscape drawn on the grandest scale, uninterrupted expanses reaching past visual range. Or so you would think, but don't take it too fast! Hurtling over the highway west out of Taos, you can imagine the range before roads, and visualize the "Badlands" pair (Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek, in a fast sedan fueled by mythical "drip gas") racing full-throttle over unbroken prairie, when suddenly, almost too fast to stop, a line, crack -- surprise! crevasse! -- appears crossing your path, with a far cliff hundreds of feet away, over a straight vertical drop to a river channel deep below. If you do manage to stop before flying over the edge, and catch your breath, you see a boxlike slot canyon over 500 feet deep, extending beyond sight miles in either direction, an abrupt rend in the flat featureless fabric of the arid plateau, and you wonder, what an absolute divide this must have been before steel bridges. Below, a snakey Rio Grande hisses a muffled roar over rapids and rocks, and you may be lucky to spot a raft or kayak, and exchange waves with adventurers, too far to hear each other's voices over the susurrant din.
