Story

The main Orono Post Office is located at 1 Bennoch Street in Orono, Maine. Built in 1933, it is a fine local example of Classical Revival architecture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.Description and historyThe Orono Post Office is set on a triangular wedge-shaped lot at the northwest corner of Forest and Bennoch Streets, just off Orono's Main Street . Oriented toward the junction, it is a T-shaped single-story brick and masonry structure with a flat roof and a balustraded parapet. The main facade is seven bays wide, five of which are in a central section that projects slightly. These central bays all feature round-arch openings, with the main entrance in the central one, and windows in the others. The outer two bays have rectangular openings filled with sash windows, topped by a keystone. The central section is flanked by stone pilasters. The interior lobby space of the building features terrazzo marble flooring, marble wainscoting and door trim, and plaster walls with dentil moulding at the cornice. Some of the interior is later 20th-century work, done to match existing original trim. The building was designed in 1932 by Louis A. Simon, the Supervising Architect of the United States Treasury Department, and was completed in 1932. The construction drawings were prepared by a local firm, Stallworth and Davis, as part of an early program to expand job opportunities. Its lobby area underwent a major renovation in the 1980s which included the provision of new aluminum boxes.

Went there twice to do a money order. I swipe my card and it doesn't work. I ask if I can use the other card swiper (there are two), and the first time they let me and my card worked fine. The 2nd time, they refused to allow me to use the other card swiping machine and so I had to withdraw money from the ATM across the street for $3. The entire both times they sneered and acted as if I was poor because my card wasn't working, when it's in fact one of their machines being broken. How have these people not been reprimanded or fired is beyond me. Probably the worst service I have ever gotten at any non-restaurant establishment.

I was helping an elderly neighbor who has low vision and is very hard of hearing. She was getting ready to go to Arizona for a couple months to visit her twin sister, whom she hasn't seen in almost 25 years. She wanted to put a hold on her mail, buy some stamps for postcards to send back to her grandkids, and inquire about getting a passport (because she and her sister are thinking about going down to Nicaragua with a church group, to distribute donations she recently raised from a bunch of people during a Trump Inauguration party in Bangor. I was expecting it to be a miserable experience, but the gentleman who helped us ("Gary") was incredibly friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, and kind. What a great experience from the U.S. Postal Service!! Kudos!!!

Always very rude and don't know how to give proper customer service. Also are very unhelpful when it comes to delivering packages and have returned mine frequently just because I wasn't there to pick them up because apparently a mailbox means nothing these days. Would love to see this post office under better management or different employees them maybe things might be better.
