Founded in 2007, Valley Oral & Facial Surgery has been providing patient care for over seven years.

Dr. Petersen, Dr. Tanabe, and Dr. Schneider are Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. They have the expertise and experience to provide you and your family with safe and comfortable oral and facial surgery procedures. Each of our surgeons underwent an additional 4-6 years of hospital based surgical and anesthesia training after completing dental school. Our surgeons manage a wide variety of problems relating to the mouth, teeth and facial regions. We practice a full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery with expertise ranging from dental implant placement, oral pathology to wisdom tooth removal. We can also diagnose and treat facial pain, facial injuries, facial infections and perform a full range of dental implant procedures.

We have the education, experience and resources to provide our patients with the safest oral surgical care. We pride ourselves in taking exceptional care of our patients and their families.

Went to Dr. Peterson to pull all 4 of my wisdom teeth. Check in process went fine but as soon as they took me back it was like they were in a hurry to get me out of there. Nurses never introduced themselves, never talked to me about what was going to happen just told me to scoot back and squeeze my hand and they were giving me some medicine to put me to sleep. Another thing is they strapped my arms to my sides and I could see Dr. Peterson walking around in the room but never bothered to ask how I was doing or what not. I felt that way at my consult too but didn't know who else to go to. When I went in for the original consult he basically told us no info. It was a waste of a trip to drive an hour and see him for maybe 5/10 min. After I woke up from surgery nobody told me what I was supposed to do following surgery. They didn't even tell my mom who was driving me on what to do. I had to ask one of my friends who had gone there on what to do. All they did was gave me a bag and sent me home. I was not impressed by anything and my grandma had also had a bad experience there too. From now on I will not be back as I will be finding somewhere else to go if need be. Dr. Peterson has NO personality

I haven't seen Dr Marcus Tanabe but I know that his father is a wonderful man, so this review is not about Dr Tanabe. Though Dr Troy Petersen is someone I wouldn't send my worst enemy to. I had an infection in a tooth that needed to be pulled about 3 years ago. The staff said that I would want to be sedated so I wouldn't experience any pain. If you are/were ever on hold, spoke to a receptionist, or had a consultation you would hear about how much they care that their patients are as comfortable as possible. I have a very high threshold for pain but I went with their recommendation and have never felt as violated or lied to in my life. I was strapped in the reclining chair and the IV was set with no problems. The first mistake the staff that was working on me that day made was that they pushed the meds into my IV line right before Dr Petersen started jabbing me with at least 5 or 6 very painful injections of lidocaine. He didn't take the time to use the topical numbing agent before and he gave the lidocaine absolutely no time to do anything. I could feel the singing cold of his instrument as he crushed my tooth, instead of try to pull it out intact. I was screaming because of the intensity of the pain and he didn't care. I looked at one of the dental assistants for help and she said "it's okay, the doctor is just looking around at your teeth". Of course something she said to calm me down, but just ended up making me more upset because she was lying to me with tears streaming down my face and me still screaming in pain. As soon as Dr Petersen was done he walked out without saying anything to me because he gives 0 f**ks about his patients. That cost me over $1,000 because I don't have dental insurance, but would have gotten better care if I didn't listen to the dentist I was seeing, sought out another dentist who would have put me on antibiotics for at least a few days and property numbed the area, and it would have cost me around $130. Now I have a crippling fear of going to the dentist and always have a panic attack as soon as I'm sitting in the chair. Sadly the dentist my mother was seeing was also pushing people to go to Dr Petersen. I went in the first time with her and explained the extreme pain and discomfort I went through and hammered it into the dental assistant as well as I could. I was reassured that they would make sure that she was comfortable. Sadly what happened to me also happened to my mother. Her dentist again had her see Dr Petersen, I again went in and spoke with them about the piss poor job they did with my extraction and how they failed my mother at keeping her comfortable, as all of their staff will regurgitate over and over about their main concern is keeping their patience comfortable, but they don't give a rats a**. So my mother went through it all again. So if you need extractions done please ask your dentist if they would be able to do them. It seemed like for a while most dentists were sending all of their patients who needed extractions to the evil Dr Petersen. But there is another option called Face & Jaw Surgery Center in Grand Forks. The nice thing is that the main doctor has privileges at Altru Hospital. So if he feels that the procedure needs to be done in a hospital setting he can do that. I will be going there soon because I now need extensive work done. I take very good care of my teeth but due to medical conditions and my fear of just going to a dentist, all of my teeth have gone to s***. After I go to them I will be leaving a review.

In 2015, I had a tooth extracted last year from Valley Oral & Facial Surgery by Dr. Troy Petersen. Dr. Petersen then performed prep work and final preparation for the implant. Everything went great! The office staff was very professional and I felt Dr. Petersen explained the procedure very well. The insurance process went smoothly and there was no setbacks. Ryan Callahan of Minot, ND

I debated with dr about if daughter needed anesthesia. He said yes ...what should have cost me $54 cost me $317 because the insurance didn't cover being put out like they told me it would. I believed the referral from the ortho that came so highly and it ended up biting me in the butt. I tried to work something out with them but the insurance lady didnt get what I was saying either and just kept telling me that I signed the consent and that was between the dr and I. Guess I should have walked out and gotten second opinion. Thanks for pulling out two simple extraction baby teeth for $500 plus dollars!

I just have a big molar removed by Dr Tanabe and everything went perfect. I will be honest sure it was painful after the numbing agent wore off but they gave me a prescription for that along with everything I needed at home. Dr Tanabe is so nice and makes you feel at home right away. It took about 15 minutes to get it done and without complication. I drove from Fargo to Grand Forks because he came highly recommended from a friend. I am so glad I made the drive to have a wonderful, caring Doctor take care of me. I would highly recommended him to Family and friends without a second of concern. The Staff is wonderful, no one like's getting a Molar pulled but rest assured I was in the best of the Best to get it done. Grand Forks is so lucky to have a fine oral surgeon like Dr Tanabe. I am lucky it is not far away. Thank you Dr Tanabe and also to his wonderful staff. God Bless!!! Kevin Storey
