For our first trip to Montreal, we went to Vargas expecting to try the best of Montreal steak and fine dining. Boy were we sorely disappointed, not only for the higher price we paid, the food quality is just sub par. We started with the Vargas VIP platter, which I can sum up as just a very very mediocre beef satay, calamari, dumpling, roasted vegetables...home cook ingredients that doesn't befit a gourmet meal. The sauces paired are just plain and reminds me of watered down version of the real chili/satay peanut sauce. At least they tried incorporating Asian cuisine in their westernized way 0.5 star Onto the main courses, we ordered the NY sirloin, lamb chop and steak. It took almost an hour for the entrees to arrive. Both steaks and lamb chop are not very memorable the fact that the sides are priced separately and comes in separate plating makes the lone steak on the plate look bare, taste bland with no hint of spices, and they don't even serve it with any sauce at all. You know the steaks are sub-par when the roasted potatoes and garlic mash stole the star of the entrees. 0.5 star As for the sushi, reminds me of the sushi you find in gas stations. I can get better sushi off from T&T for way less. So much for the expensive price tag and pretentious upscale vibe, the food is really mediocre and ruined our Montreal foodie experience. Should have stick with The Keg, at least they are consistently good. I will still give two stars for the service. Despite the sad food and the fact they didn't have our tables ready when we arrived with reservation, our server is attentive and polite. 1 star Service - 7/10 Decor - 8/10 Presentation - 2/10 Food - 2/10 I would NOT recommend going to Vargas for any meal, you will find better at a food court or walk a few blocks to The Keg for a much better steak meal.
This is one of the highly rated restaurants in Montreal and we decided to try it out for their steaks. Was not impressed and not sure what the fuss is all about. The appetizer platter gives you a good mix of different dishes to try. The mini burgers were really good and so was the hot sauce. They have a full bar for those who are thirsty! For the main course, I chose the Rib Eye Vargas Cut as it is the specialty of the restaurant. The sauce the steak came in was good but I personally dint care so much for the steak. Not that it was bad.... it just was not great. My colleagues tried the lamb shank and a rib eye. Their feedback on their dishes were similar to mine - nothing out of the ordinary. The kung fu style fries did not satisfy my palette either. Service was just fine. The restaurant is located in downtown Montreal and can get busy during peak hours. Making a reservation would be advisable. Pricing : Moderate to high. Not worth the money given the food was average. Will I return? : Not on my own will ;
Slow service but very friendly and charming place. Highly recommend taking their Beef Prime Rib au jus: 12oz of juicy meat with a good amount of fat. The dish is just the big piece of meat so if you want sides those are extras $$. Very dissapointing cheesecake portion size for the pice 10$ for mini 3 bite cheescake however it was tasty.
This is a high end restaurant. We had salmon tartare as starter which was excellent but quite a small serving for 24$. Then ahs the vip starter which had fillet Mignon sticks, prawn, calamari, vege, and goyza :: 32$ Then had the porter steak for sharing 130$. There were 2 sides to it. This was overall at medium rare and cooked on the hot plate. But was juicy. The fillet Mignon was too good at one end, At the exact medium rare and juicy. The other side being sirloin was a little chewy. Roasted potatoes and grilled asparagus. Which were nice. The had a creme brulee 20~ something. With drinks total bill 360 and with tip 400$. Good food but certainly a one off only.
Vargas is a steakhouse with a nice outdoor patio which we enjoyed during the pandemic. Service was friendly and prompt. The food was very good and reasonably priced. Check out the prime rib - its very good and don't forget the Apple Cheesecake for dessert - yummy!
Horrible service - waiters and owner especially are not progressive. Do not come here if you are in and interracial relationship or a person of color in general. The whole time in the restaurant the owner in a white polo and one of the older white waiters would stare and give dirty looks. I had to request someone to take our order as the older white man that was assigned to wait on us never spoke to us or provided us water. They eventually changed waiters. Food was also trash. Look at the poutine fries I posted. Tasted like they looked. It’s like if jelly belly jellybeans made a trash juice flavor. This place is not worth the price or the service. Also fruit flies or some other bugs flying around enjoying the food more than I did. The saving grace of this restaurant is a water named Robert. One of the nicest and most genuine people you will ever meet. Took care of us and made the night better. Robert deserves better and is a gem. Spend your money where it is appreciated. These other pretentious employees and owner will have to either treat people equally and with respect to earn money from me again.
Nice place, great and accessible location Good service, tho when you make a reservation for a birthday and thats not even acknowledged.. well, then why do they even ask if its for a special event Had the lobsger tail and kansas steak. I do recommend the lobster tails over the steak as the steak was quite salty - but still alright. Not a big fan of their wine selection as everything was quite dry Our server was hilarious, he was snappy, always had a comment for everything, seriously looked forward to what he would say every time he came to our table.
Vargas is a great place for meat lovers in Montreal. I got the Tender Samurai 7 oz filet mignon with maki roll sushi and it was a perfect medium rare. The sushi was delicious as well. I tried a bit of my friend’s lamb ribs and it was so juicy and tender - melted in my mouth! Overall, really good. The service is a little slow but it’s not a big deal if you have some extra time to enjoy the ambience and your food.
It was just okay. We made a reservation online and we got a table immediately. The restaurant is nicely decorated. A QR code was given to view their menu. We ordered onion soup, prime rib, lamb shank, filet mignon and a sushi platter. Onion soup had a thick layer of cheese but onion taste was not strong. Prime rib is okay but the sauce was a bit salty. Lamb shank was not hot. Everything else was okay. Service was pretty good.
We went to this restaurant on Valentine's for dinner. Everything was amazing, the food, staff, drinks everything. Totally recommend!!
