Today we had decided to celebrate my wifes 5 year remission of breast cancer recovery by going to have a picnic at one of the Vent.County parks. I remembered the good times I had when I was a kid at Stekle park in Santa Paula, and decided to go there. (BIG MISTAKE!) We arrived there and drove threw to the entrance gate. The Park Ranger asked for the $4 dollar fee. No problem. As I gave it to him I was trying to tell him of our little celebration because i am a bragger.. He really didnt care or even acknowledge what I was saying, he just wanted his money. Thats cool! I know people arnt generally freindly, so I understand. I asked him what spaces were open and he said nearly all of them and I wouldnt have a problem finding one. Needless to say the place was deserted may be 3 campers and another picnicer, it was dead! We picked a place that was at the end of the park and a little secluded. It was myself, my wife, my son , my pregnate Daughter and my son inlaw. We had been there maybe 10 minutes and just started to eat our sandwiches when all of a sudden this park gulf cart starts coming strait at us and stops in front of our bench, this guy jumps out with no uniform and no name badge. He informs us that we are not alowed to be in this spot becaouse we are not campers. We did not know there was a diference and told him that the Park Ranger said it was all open. HE didnt want to hear it. I then explained that we were going to be here for about an hour and already started eating and that we would leave as soon as we were done. Again he didnt want to hear it and demanded we leave now! So we packed up our meal half eaten and left. I went back to the Park Ranger and asked why he didnt tell us of the difference between campers and picnicer spots. His responce was a tone of sarcastic politness and non caring. He said he didnt have to becauose it was posted on signs which I apparently missed. and when asked him why he told me that all the spots were open he lied and said that is not what he ment. And if we didnt like it we can leave! So we left. I and my family felt our celebrationjed ruined and humiliated. No one deserves their dignity taken away I know that the County Officials of Ventura County and the Ventura County Parks Dept will ignore me, i have heard that this is not unusuall for them, and the behavior of their County park Staff. They seem to believe that the parks and their jobs are at their pleasure, not The pleasure of the Tax payers of the citizens of Ventura County. I strongly sugguest, to all that if you want to camp or picnic in Ventura county,. Go to a City or State, and federal Park. They know about customer service and compassion for the enviroment and community relations compared to the Ventura County Park system. Especially the Steckel Park Staff Nazis. Shane J. Davis
