Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

About

VMFA Arts is a top comprehensive US art museum with more than 5,000 years of art from around the world. VMFA is open 365 days a year and general admission is always free. The Wall Street Journal recently stated that VMFA is now a "two day museum."

Story

There's lots to see and do at VMFA, from special exhibitions, collections that span the globe and the history of creative achievement, two restaurants, a not-to-be-missed shop, talks and programs that make the art come alive, and so much more!

As of Oct 1, VMFA was certified as a Virginia Green attraction. What does that mean? It means we make recycling available, minimize the use of disposable food products and printed materials, reduce solid waste, use water efficiently, and conserve energy. But most importantly, it means we are always working harder to be better stewards of the environment. Don't forget to do your part!

Wonderful. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts was a fantastic surprise when we first moved here 25 years ago. It has just continued to improve over the years. It is small but still too big to do in only one day. Exhibits are outstanding with lots of written info about what you are seeing and the artist who created it. Their website tells you what is there at the moment and what will be coming. The gift shop has a wonderful variety of stuff and the cafe has good food at prices that aren't too inflated. The children's classes are staffed by creative, warm, caring people. This is Richmond at its best. We are so lucky to have it here.

A great variety of art. The museum is very clean and well laid out. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. The casual dining eatery had a good selection of food at reasonable prices. Also, I had the opportunity to see their special exhibit, "The Terracotta Army, The Legacy of the First Emperor of China." It was very interesting and educational. I thought it was awesome that the museum was able to aquire these artifacts and statues from China that are over 2000 years old!

I love this museum. I have visited several times. They have a few Fabergé eggs which is a cool thing to see in person. The museum also has some really great examples of ornate furniture that show great craftsmanship. Another favorite of mine is the Tiffany glass pieces, lamps and bowls and such. Overall it is a really cool place to spend an afternoon and there is usually a special traveling exhibit in the downstairs portion. I highly recommend this as a must see for Richmond.

We went during their showing of the Terracotta soldiers. Drove 4 hours just to be told that they were all sold out. We were disappointed at first. But then we looked around the museum and fell in love with ever single piece of art. We are a family of artists and to see so much culture in one place was astounding to us. My husband is from Iceland and my family is from Australia and India. So much to see and for FREE! Come on people. This is a hidden gem!

I've been going to this museum with my family since I was a little girl, and it has always been a delight. The exhibits are informative and interesting for people of all ages. There's something for everyone to be entertained! Although the café and gift shop may be pricey, the money goes toward funding the museum's future exhibits and preserving the artwork they already have. All in all, an afternoon trip to see the Terracotta Army was well worth it!! *SPOILER** These statues will humble you.
