While recently looking through some old photos, I found some of my father with a large stringer of fish, dated 1941, WA GA THA KA. Instantly memories came to mind of many many past vacations at WA GA THA KA and what those vacations had meant to me. By the late 1950's WA GA THA KA was our families yearly vacation pick, sometimes for 1 week, sometimes for 2 weeks. Our family vacations continued at WA GA THA KA into the 1960's. I met Jon and Doug Miner when I was 7 years old. What a fantastic experience that was on a young impressionable boy. Jon taught me to water ski and slalom, I believe I was his youngest student. In those years Jon was larger than life to me, I was like a lost puppy dog and I believe if Jon had stopped quickly I would have run into him. I remember first thing in the morning, I would start a fire in the cabin with "Goop" to take the morning chill off, then down to the dock to fish for awhile until the smell of blueberry pancakes, bacon, and eggs would come lofting down from the lodge. I was fortunate enough to be able to eat my breakfast with Jon and Doug in the kitchen, all you wanted, although we had to wash our own dishes .... After breakfast it was chore time, we would bring wood to the cabin's, make "Goop", for fire starting, (a secret recipe), put the coffee grounds from the kitchen into the worm beds, stack wood for the sauna, and the best part of the day was taking the trash out to the dump and observe the black bears. Later in the evening I would stand on the dock and watch Jon all dressed up, barefoot water ski across the lake. I was amazed how he never got wet.. In the afternoon, Mr. Miner would start the old fire truck at the lodge and all of the kids staying up there would run to get on for a ride. It was my mission in life to then run as fast as possible to get the "front seat" so that I could wind up the siren.. In retrospect, what a fantastic place to build lasting friendships and memories. Many things have changed since those days, but if you sit outside your cabin in the early evening and watch the sunset, you will see something that could never be reproduced by the finest artists on canvass, The quietness itself has it's own song, and if your lucky, you may feel the warmth from the many guests who came before you and left their foot prints in the sand. Inside the lodge there was a glass display case which contained some fishing lures, and CANDY BARS, Mr. Miner on occasion would give me one and I wondered what I had done that day to deserve this treat. WA GA THA KA is a must visit, learn the history, and make your own memories. And as far as the rides on the fire truck at the lodge with Mr. Miner by my side, that left quite the impression!!! Respectfully, Doug Kelder, Retired Deputy Fire Marshall Northbrook Fire Department, Il.
