Story

Making wet suits is our business. It is not a part time business for us, nor a hobby, nor are we order takers for the real manufacturer in another state. We are the manufacturer. Since 1976, we have made wet suits in our own manufacturing facilities, just a few feet away from the retail showroom. You can see more of our store here. Meanwhile, you can see the manufacturing end on this page.

Below are pictures of most of the steps in the making of a custom wetsuit order. After a pattern is drafted on heavy craft paper, the pattern is transferred to the neoprene by tracing with a chalk pencil. The pieces are then cut, smaller pieces glued, pressed together and sewn with blind stitches, first on one side, then the other. The binding is sewn on the appropriate edges (like ankle and wrist openings, collars, and zipper flap edges. The remaining major pieces are glued and sewn together, zippers sewn in, and a wet suit has been created.

There are a few more steps in between, especially with fittings, although the above is the basic procedure for glued and sewn wet suits, the best way to make them.

Products

The style of suit you buy has a definite bearing on your warmth and the thickness needed. Styles of wet suits include a one-piece jumpsuit, two-piece farmer john (farmer jane for women), long sleeve shorty, and short sleeve shorty.

So the suit I got was great, Being with a Public Safety Team the Zippers are the best thing after sliced bread (time), BUT THE TURN AROUND TIME 5 MONTHS AND 4 FITTINGS IS NOT WORTH IT. If I was not local and could just drive over I would have charged back my card and canceled my order. again GREAT suit, but not worth the wait.

Male Diver) Awesome! I dive in water from 40 degrees to 80 degrees depending on the time of year. Connie suggested a full 5mm suit with a 5mm jumper made to go over the top. This has given me the flexibility to have as much as 10mm in my core but still have mobility i need with students. I have had my suit for four months now and have around 50 dives on it. The quality is top notch, it has shown zero signs of wear. I love the fit as well. I go to the gym a bit and have a large upper frame and a smaller waist size. I used to have to wear a 3xl to fit my chest and shoulders and I was still constricted in the arms. But, I was freezing to death due to being so big around the waist. I am more comfortable in this full 5mm and 5mm jumper than I am in my off the shelf 3mm suit. I dove a 44 degree lake and I was surprised I wasn't colder. It was beyond the limits of what it was designed for but did well. I'll still dive a dry suit next time though. I spend a lot of time stationary with students and I love not having the cold distract me anymore. Get the zippered arms and legs. Wow. Getting in and out is very easy. Connie and her husband spent quite a bit of time helping to make a the right decisions. Thanks so much!

I am quite tall and skinny and as a result regular wet suits just don't fit me at all. I was told to try Wetwear and it was definitely a great decision! The custom wet suit they made for me fits perfectly! Not to mention the arm and leg zippers, which make putting it on and taking it off quick and painless.

unbelievable wetsuit. Making dives in 46 degree water wearing a Wetwear 3 mil suit. 90 feet down and 46 degrees and I am fine. Only thing cold are my hands. Wish Wetwear made gloves. I cannot say enough about the Connie and her staff. They are great people and have your best interest in mind. The product speaks for itself, you really need to get one of their suits.

I have the sort of rotund body which does not work in off the shelf wetsuits. In getting ready for my open-water cert dives, I contacted Connie at Wetwear to order a custom wetsuit. Connie spoke with me at great length on my dive plans, so she could determine the right suit. I live in Cincinnati and plan diving Midwestern quarries and lakes, in addition to tropical vacations. She recommended a 3-mm jumpsuit and a 5-mm shorty, with both worn in cooler waters. It took a while to get the measurements made, and I would advise getting an order made well in advance of your trip. The measurements were very detailed. Connie sent the suit to me after the first stage of sewing for a double-check on the fit. The final fit was perfect! the suit was not cheap, and I opted for arm and leg zippers. These made a huge difference in donning the suit easily, and I find them well worth it. I also ordered a custom hood. So far, I have dove with the suit 9 times in Midwest quarries, and 6 dives in Hawaii. I am highly impressed with the workmanship and the fit of the Wetwear suit. I am sure it will last me many, many dives. So, the summary is that Wetwear suits are not cheap, but the quality is definitely worth the price to me. If you are a non-standard body size, Wetwear is the only way to go. I figured I started at the summit of quality, rather than getting several cheaper options on the way to getting the right suit. I highly recommend Wetwear custom suits!
