I have 4 boys. Three already graduated from Wheeling and one entering as a freshman in the fall. My three WHS graduates all attended grreat universities. U of I in Champaign, Rutgers in NJ and Clemson SC. The STEM program at WHS is amazing and I am impressed with the knowledge and experience of the teachers . They challenge the students and encourage them to achieve them to achieve their goals. WHS has a great music program, robotics and debate team. As with any HS, the key is to get the kids involved. The athletic program is the weakest link at WHS. However, it really gives the kids opportunities to try all sports.

I've had 3 different boys in 3 different schools in District 214; Buffalo Grove HS, Hersey HS and Wheeling HS. I attended Hersey HS way back in the late '70's. While I found the administration the easiest to deal with at BG, much of that had to do with my son's counselor Maxine Jacobs. Hersey HS had the most difficult administration to deal with from the registrar down to the counselors, none of whom were terribly helpful. The principal of Hersey did his best but I believe even he was bound by the restrictions of an extremely unhelpful and rude District 214 administration. As for Wheeling HS, for the most part I've had a positive experience with the exception of the counseling staff. They are difficult to get a hold of and the secretary in the office never, ever answers her phone. Nor do I often get a call back. The focus now seems to be getting kids to pursue STEM careers and quite frankly most kids have neither the interest nor the aptitude to do. As well, it marginalizes all of the kids who either don't want to go to college or want to start somewhere other than a 4 year university. Admittedly this has a lot to do with state and national governing policies, procedures and financing most of which the district has no control over. Having said all that I am very happy to be saying goodbye to District 214...this time I hope it's for good.
