About

36 American beers on tap, American style cuisine, top notch service, and an atmosphere that's tough to beat.

Story

Hidden just inside the first floor of Cedar Rapids’ historic Witwer Building is the White Star Ale House. Don’t let the elegance of the White Star’s lobby fool you, the atmosphere is completely casual and the prices are moderate. Once inside you’ll discover one of the more unique restaurants in the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids Corridor. Whether you take a seat in the dining room, in the tap room, or right at the bar, you’ll be treated to a menu that consists of creative interpretations of classic American dishes. Try one of the 36 American beers on tap (many of them local), or perhaps one of the scores of bottled beers. A selection of American wines await you, as well. Or if all other options fail to tantalize, don’t miss White Star’s selection of classic and modern cocktails; many of which were invented in-house by their talented staff of mixologists.

Dinner options range from burgers, wraps, and sandwiches, to down-home comfort food like chicken, salmon, meatloaf, pot roast, pork chops, prime rib, and pork shanks, just to name a few. Of course you’ll get to choose a homemade side dish with each item, French fries, sweet potato fries, smashed potatoes, our famous cheesey potatoes, a veggie medley, or Chef Antonio’s veggie of the day are some options. We also offer vegetarian options, and a host of gluten-free choices, too. Naturally we’ve got dessert covered with some pretty amazing cheesecakes, brownies, cookies, and ice cream. We’d recommend enjoying a glass of Port Wine from the nearby Cedar Ridge Winery with your dessert.

If you're hosting a large group dinner (rehearsal dinners, business meetings, showers, bachelor/bachelorette parties) inquire about the private "Museum Room" which seats up to 50 dinner guests comfortably. Smaller private dining areas are soon to be constructed in the lobby, as well.

White Star Ale House is open seven days a week at 3:30pm, and hosts a twice daily happy hour full of half-price drink specials from 3:30pm ‘til 6:00pm and again from 10:00pm until midnight.

Outstanding staff and service. Food was ok. I had the pistachio chicken. It was over-breaded and lacked salt. Combined effect was a dry piece of chicken. My wife's entree was described as the prime rib leftovers from the night before covered in sauteed onions & cheese. She said that she wasn't expecting perfection because this was a second day meal but there was a taste from the meat that made her think this was more than one night since the prime rib was originally cooked. Because our other food was good and the staff was fantastic, maybe we caught them on an off night.

The White Star Ale House is perfect for casual drinks and a great venue for conversation. The music is usually never too loud, allowing you to talk comfortably with a slightly raised volume of voice than regular talking. White Star is typically dimmer with elegant ceiling lights and overall has a very relaxing feel to the place. White Star has a sleek and modern looking bar with plenty of bar seats to spare, a ton of booths with high walls that offer some mock privacy and help prevent sound spreading, and large tables for groups to chat. The best time to go to White Star is during happy hour when margaritas, and the ale house sangria is half off!

Food is good, I got a prime beef sandwich. Not to bad. Cheesy potatoes were one of the better I have had. I am always impressed when I fine a place that has at least 4 beers u haven't had. This place achieved this goal. Which is hard to do with my beer exploration experience. A little to loud for my taste. Expected for the type of environment. If you don't mind it's a nice place for a bite to eat and good beer.
