I toured Whitney Plantation (and a handful of others) for thesis research. Whitney stood out as my favorite for a number of reasons, but the most prominent was this: this site not only leans into discussions of slavery, but actually commemorates the myriad slaves that sustained it. This is an incredibly rare and refreshing approach to plantation tours. Whitney Plantation pulls no punches. Our tour guide, Susan, was knowledgeable and unflinching. And although our group sometimes grew rowdy, she remained comprehensive and approachable. *If you want to tour a plantation without actually having to confront the inhumane forces that sustained it-- go on a different tour, because this one isn't for you; this one is not designed to discuss the property's beautiful spanish moss. The Whitney Plantation tour refuses to gloss over the reprehensible conditions of slavery, because their goal is education. Not consolation.

Enlightening, one of a kind experience. This plantation tour is from the perspective of the enslaved. On the plantation grounds we visited a church prominent in the community, the slave quarters, outside kitchen, prison, other utilitarian buildings for use by the slave and viewed various monuments dedicated to those sold and slaughtered for the benefit of their owners. Visited before we left the area with my children to allow us all the experience and to increase our knowledge and sense of self. Rain or shine the tour goes on and only stops for lightening on the property. Umbrellas are provided and ponchos are available for purchase at the store prior to starting your tour. I also enjoyed the opportunity to return to areas on the guided tour after our tour ended. Thanks Whitney Plantation crew!

It was a very emotional and moving experience. We are thankful to our wonderful tour guide (Historian) Ali who guided us through the plantation and told the stories of our ancestors. I felt like I was walking on sacred ground. The spirit of my ancestors were speaking me. I was moved to tears just thinking of their suffering. Everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime.

Whitney Plantation is a must-see. The plantation story, as lived by generations of enslaved people. Our guide, Cheryl, clearly drew the human cost of so much of the world's wealth. Excellent, that each of us wore the name, words and depiction of an enslaved child, and Cheryl encouraged us to find "our"particular statue on the grounds. The museum and memorial walls make eloquent use of testimony gathered by the Federal Writers Project in the 1930s. Those accounts would be greatly enriched if Whitney Plantation participated in collecting and sharing oral histories of local sharecroppers while that is still possible.

Educational and fascinating insight into the slave trade and the life lead by slaves in the south. A great collection of historical artifacts, buildings, and valuable artworks. Well worth the trip.
