Story

William Floyd House, also known as Nicholl Floyd House and Old Mastic House, was a home of William Floyd, a signer of the United States Declaration of Independence, in Mastic Beach, New York. It was his home from 1734 until 1803. This home is distinct from Gen. William Floyd House, his later home in Westernville, New York, that is also on the National Register and which was designated a National Historic Landmark. The two William Floyd houses are believed to be the only surviving homes in New York of signers of the Declaration of Independence. The Mastic home is "reputed to be the best preserved and oldest manor house" in its part of Long Island. It is located about south of Washington Avenue and Wavecrest Drive in Mastic Beach. The home was built by Nicholl Floyd, who was William Floyd's father, and was given to William's son, also named Nicholl Floyd. The house was visited by Marquis de Lafayette and others. The house is owned by the National Park Service as part of Fire Island National Seashore, although it's not on Fire Island itself.

The William Floyd Estate was a perfect afternoon experience my wife, newborn and myself. The National Park Ranger Guide was wonderful. I honestly am blanking on her name mainly because everything she had to say was about the Floyd Estate and family. She had been there since 79' and had so many interesting stories about the house and the estate. Great time spent on some beautiful land. Fantastic and surreal view of the ocean from the house too. NOTE: When just clicking "Directions" on your phone it will take you to the wrong place. Make sure you click on the actual entrance address.

Signer of the declaration of independence. Very interesting guided tour. Free. Nice natural grounds. Open only part of the year. House is a history in itself.

A nice place for a historical walk with family or friends. A guided tour can be arranged to see the house and the property. Open on weekends starting Fridays. Be prepared for ticks and mosquitos. Lots of them!
