I am writing this review in hopes that it will help other families who are relocating to Summerlin. Having relocated from El Segundo, CA, I wish I had more information about the schools here. I figured since Summerlin is nice it would be fine. This post is not intended to bash the school at all. Please keep in mind, this was my experience with one particular 4th grade teacher (we had 2 kids in school here), during August- October 2015 but have since put them in private school. As I stated, we relocated from El Segundo, CA. There is a lot of chatter from what I understand regarding quality of education in CA vs. NV. My personal experience is that Lummis does not even come close to the quality of education, and experience of what our kids had in El Segundo. I do have a friend here whose older children went to Lummis but said since then, "all the good teachers have retired." According to my hair stylist who has lived here for over 20 yrs and has lived in Summerlin since moving here 20 yrs ago, says there is a huge need for teachers here and there is a lot of turnover. She also said, many families move out of Vegas once their kids hit school age because the schools are so bad. Another parent I know is married to a Clark County teacher and has a ridiculously hard time getting the support she needs from the school AND parents (not a teacher in Summerlin) This is a state issue as well, as you can see. My biggest issue with Lummis is that I simply did not feel comfortable with the experience my child had within the classroom. I found his teacher to be extremely scatter-brained and unprepared. I noticed this during an orientation before school started. She was all over the place during the orientation. Like she had 3 Red Bulls and some RX meds before the orientation. After 4 weeks of school, I had not seen anything come home that was graded, there were no quizzes or anything of the like. According to my child, students were not allowed to ask questions during a certain period of time during the day. I understand this information is coming from a 9 yr old, however there were several instances where he had a question about his homework but was not allowed to ask because the teacher was working with another student. She would be very rude to him as well as other students and handed out written disciplinary notes very liberally, I get that in 4th grade part of the goal is to help children become more responsible/independent, however what happened is that my son became afraid of her and was afraid to get in trouble at school and then possibly at home, because he got in trouble at school. He just stopped asking questions altogether. In his teacher's defense, she was very nice whenever we did speak. I'm sure she was overwhelmed. It seems public school teachers here are not set up for success in the classroom. I did email her with some of my concerns. Rather than emailing me back, she took the time to call me and we spoke for quite a while. I know another family who has a child in the same class and the mother had a really hard time with this teacher for a while. Unfortunately, her child would get so anxious and stressed in this teacher's class that she missed a couple days of school. After 2 or 3 meetings with the principal and teacher, the mother told me things are a lot better. I just don't think it should have to come to that point. Ultimately, we decided to put our kids in a private school. If you can afford private school, I highly recommend you do. If not, which is totally understandable, I have heard from several parents who live here that Bonner is the best public school. Our kids are super happy in their new school. It was just a better fit for us personally. I want to echo my earlier comment. I am not trying to bash Lummis at all. This was just my experience. There were several other situations at this school that made me uneasy which I didn't add just simply due to the fact that I have already written a short novel. Hope this helps.
