Story

Willie Mae’s Scotch House was established in 1957 as a bar in New Orleans’ Historic Treme neighborhood. After a year, the bar was moved to it’s current location, which consisted of a bar, a barbershop and beauty salon in the front. In the early 1970’s, the beauty salon closed, which brought on the demand for a restaurant from Willie Mae’s bar customers. The aromas of Mississippi and Louisiana cuisine emanating from the kitchen filled the air and brought on constant demand for delicious food. Their demand was met and the rest is history. In 2005, Ms. Willie Mae Seaton was honored with the prestigious James Beard Award for “America’s Classic Restaurant for the Southern Region.”

Shatteringly crisp skin. Simply seasoned. If you just get off the plane and come here, you'll think it's salty, but after eating everything else down here, you'll realize that's how NOLA cooks. Great service. Tasty lemonade. The 3 pieces are a Russian roulette of chicken. In got two wings and a breast. Wife got a leg, wing and a thigh. They will up charge to special order, so just share what you get. Sides are scrumptious as well.

Wowzers! Amazing fried chicken and great atmosphere. We beat the queue by going there pretty early after they’d opened. The fried okra side was a bit weird, wouldn’t get that again but the quality of the chicken makes up for it! Crispy and tasty and not too greasy. Reasonably priced too. It’s a no frills place but a must visit in New Orleans!

Go early to avoid a long wait. Or check the google map app to see how foot traffic is. If it's long and busy just order to go. If you accept the challenge and wait you'll be welcomed in and greeted by friendly staff who make you feel right at home. The fried chicken is the dish to get of course- and it is honestly the crispiest yet lightest fried skin I've ever had. To top it off the meat was moist and juicy in both the white and dark meats. If it wasn't as pricey per 3 pieces ($15+ 2 sides) I would've got another order! Also the house salad as a SIDE is an amazing deal. By itself it's $10. Get it as a side to your meal and not as a stand alone.

No lie, the best fried chicken, fried okra, cornbread muffin, and sweet tea I’ve ever had in my life. And I’m from the South, y’all. Everything I ate at Willie Mae’s was the best I’ve ever eaten. The chicken was so juicy, so flavorful, and so delicious. I’m considering moving to New Orleans so I can eat here every day. My family went on a Monday at lunch time and were able to be seated quickly considering how busy this place is. Go here, eat everything, be happy.

Definitely a New Orleans staple! Go early for lunch and beat the crowd (they open at 10am). When we left after 11am the line was already down the street. Order the fried chicken and red beans... thank me later.
