CAVEAT EMPTOR! "Buyer beware" and "you get what you pay for" are a couple of phrases that come to mind when describing the Wyandotte County Parks and Rec Department. I was looking for a park suitable for a family gathering and was given 3 options when I called. I chose St. Margaret's Park in KCK, as it was centrally-located for our event. I paid a $30 cash reservation fee, signed the paperwork, and the "park" was ours for the day. After winding our way through the local neighborhood (there's only one point of entry to the parking area), we arrived to find the grounds had not been attended to. Ankle-high grass, as the mowers must have had higher priorities that week. The shelter house was covered in graffiti, and not just your typical street art, but rather a disturbing blend of gang slogans and obscenities. The bathrooms were locked, even though our event was to be held during the daylight hours on a Saturday, due to the park's reputation for attracting neer-do-wells. After requesting the facilities be unlocked for the use of my guests, KCK police informed me that they didn't have a key and that I would need to contact WyCo Parks and Rec on Monday. I did. I told Parks and Rec that the facilities were unacceptable and not as described when I made my reservation, and that I wanted a refund. I gave them my information and was told that I would be issued a refund by check, but that "it might take a while". This is ridiculous. If a park isn't suitable for the intended use (such as a family picnic), then Parks and Rec should either not offer to take reservations, or perhaps even no longer make St. Margaret's Park available for public use. I was extremely disappointed by my experience, both at the park (we stayed for less than an hour before finding a more suitable venue) and the Wyandotte County Parks and Rec Department's handling of my concerns. They did not uphold their end of our agreement, and then delayed recompense. I'm still waiting to receive my refund... UPDATE: The above transcript is the original review I left for the Wyandotte County Parks and Rec Department. The original post was not viewable in google maps, so my assumption is that they didn't like what I had to say about their unprofessional operation. I've only stated facts, and the lack of a publicly visible review of Wyandotte County Parks and Rec only exemplifies the idea of silencing those who disagree; which kind of goes against the spirit of even having google reviews, don't ya think?
