Open since 1956, this museum is here to preserve and tell your story! Several exhibits explore various aspects of the Yellowstone River Valley's history.
The museum looks like a small cabin on the Rims' edge, but don't judge a book by its cover! It sits atop a large lower level, housing a full sized chuck wagon, a sheep herder wagon, spellbinding collections of Northern Plains Native Tribes artifacts, historical firearms, and more! New in 2015 was an exhibit about Clark and the Corps of Discovery on the Yellowstone.
The Landmarks Gallery Feature Exhibit - A Rip-Roaring Good Time - explores the rowdy early days of Billings with stories of gambling, alcohol, theft, murder, and more.
Featuring a breathtaking view of Billings and the surrounding landscape, our large, covered deck is available to rent for private gatherings. Please contact the museum for current rates and to make a reservation.
Yellowstone County Museum is a non-profit organization that offers free admission. Your donations are greatly appreciated.
The mission of the Yellowstone County Museum (YCM) is to collect, preserve, research, interpret, and promote the history and diverse culture of the Yellowstone River Basin. We share this legacy through a full range of museum, archival, and educational programs and services in order to increase public awareness and appreciation of our heritage and to enrich the cultural and intellectual lives of everyone.
The collection of the Yellowstone County Museum contains over 23,000 artifacts displayed in 5,000 square feet of exhibit space. It consists of artifacts specific to the region and includes items from prehistory, the Fur Trade Era, Post Reservation Period, modern military engagements, and more. A large collection of Plains Indian artifacts includes war bonnets, moccasins, clothing, dolls, and trade items - all fine examples of traditional quill- and beadwork.
Our expansive photograph collection has been digitized and is available for research or personal purposes. Contact the museum to make a viewing appointment.
