Story

Zion is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Lutherans believe that it is only through the grace of God that we are saved through Christ Jesus. Our response to His grace is to serve and glorify Him and all He has made. We have found something special at Zion and would love to share it with you.

Centered in God's unconditional love and grace Zion Lutheran Church is called to bring Christ's peace and healing to a diverse community and world through worship, learning, nurturing, equipping and witnessing.

My family was one of the first members of the congregation in the late forties or early fifties. I was quite young so it's difficult to know the year. My brother Bill, sister Sue, and I were in the children's choir and my mother Betty was one of the soloists in the adult choir. Bill was an acolyte and we both played in the bell choir. Christmas season each year was exciting and you felt the love when joining in and sharing with all the church functions. Our choir visited nursing homes and hospitals, we went Christmas caroling and after we would meet at one of the parishioners home for eggnog and goodies. My childhood was filled with many hours of church activities: camp Lutherlyn, Bible school, Lenten suppers, choir practices, and of course Sunday school and confirmation classes. Besides neighbors most of my friends belonged to Zion Lutheran Church. Pastor Gerhard, his wife Helen, and their son and daughter were close family friends. After my father died and my mother planned a second marriage, Pastor Gerhard came to Florida to officiate the ceremony. These were wonderful and unforgettable childhood memories. Jackie Burton
