Story

The A.E. Backus Museum & Gallery, a 8,000 sq. ft. public visual arts facility, was established in 1960 by A.E. Backus and a group of local art enthusiasts. Open five days a week from October through mid-June (summer hours by appointment) the museum features the Nation's largest display of original paintings by Albert Ernest Backus (American 1906 – 1990). The museum also handles consignment sales of Backus paintings as well as other Treasure Coast artists of merit. Four additional exhibition wings feature changing exhibits of artwork by contemporary artists. Located in historic downtown Fort Pierce, the museum is a worthwhile stop on any visitor’s itinerary. The museum's ample free parking provides convenient access to other area attractions, casual waterside dining and boutique shopping.

A great collection of Highwaymen paintings and works along with the life history of A. E. Backus. I really enjoyed learning about this great artist who was the mentor for the Highwaymen painters. It was interesting to see how our area in Fort Pierce and Saint Lucie County has changed over the years through his depictions.

A.E.Backus was an original early Florida landscape painter. Additional, he contributed to the creation of the, Florida Highwaymen. A significant collection of many of the Highwaymen 's paintings are displayed. A definite opportunity for the appreciation of art and Florida history.

Original art by Beanie Backus and "The Highwaymen" the men he taught to paint. Whom sold their works, many in homemade wooden frames, up and down US Highway 1, thus receiving the name Hifhwaymen. View what "The Treasure Coast's landscapes and sea acapes looked like to the artists. The musuem is quiet, clean, small enough to visit in an hour or large enough to enjoy art for a lifetime. A MUST DO visit in St Lucie County. Plus located directly on the Indian River next door to the Manatee Center ($2.00 entrance fee) and the the Chamber of Conference, there is plenty to see including the river and the boats.
