Story

Abakan, Inc. was founded in 2006. Formerly known as Waste to Energy Group, Inc., the company changed its name to Abakan, Inc. in November 2009 and began conducting business in Miami, Florida under a different business strategy. The firm's primary activity is to acquire interests in and operate companies in the advanced industrial coatings and surface modification filed to take advantage of industrial firms' need for new and more complex wear and corrosion coatings. Impending legislation banning several toxic coating materials like hexavalent chrome presents an $8 billion market opportunity for coating innovators.

Abakan recently acquired a 71.1% ownership stake of MesoCoat (51% direct, 21% indirect), and currently owns a 41% stake in Powdermet, Inc. MesoCoat, Inc. is a fast growing company positioning itself to become a world leader in metal protection and repair through their high speed metallurgical cladding technologies and long-life ceramic metal coatings (cermets). Portfolio Company 2: Powdermet, Inc.

Whereas MesoCoat's product focus is on developing advanced "cermet coatings" and "fusion application technologies" to address corrosion and wear "coating needs" of clients, Powdermet Inc.'s market differentiation is based on their ability to build advanced nano-structured "metal formulations." They are currently developing four unique market solutions. Their next generation materials have 3 to 5 times the strength and hardness of current light metal alloys. A second market solution is a new energy-absorbing material which is expected to provide significant new benfits in the crash and ballistic/IED markets. From a material perspective, these energy absorbing materials have a 50% weight reduction and the ability to dissipate 500% more impact energy when compared to current aluminum alloys and foamed metals currently sold in the market. Their R&D program is protected by a full IP portfolio.
