About

Allegheny is first and foremost a burial place with over a thousand interments yearly, but it is also a place for the living to enjoy its serenity and to glimpse a time and place gone by.

Story

Pittsburgh's tender mercies, respect for its lands, and loyalty to high ideals are more than evident within the gates of Allegheny Cemetery. Conceived in the minds of Pittsburgh's leading families and businessmen in 1844, Allegheny Cemetery was created to be far more than the typical country burying grounds of that age.

After its incorporation, 100 acres were purchased and the first interment took place in 1845. Today, Allegheny Cemetery encompasses 300 acres with over 15 miles of roadways. Of that 300 acres, 100 acres remain for future development, making Allegheny not only one of the most affordable but accessible cemeteries in the greater Pittsburgh area.

Allegheny Cemetery has been the choice of more than 124,000 people as their final resting place. Some had worldwide fame, others were known throughout Pittsburgh. But most were known only by the friends and family who loved them and wanted the assurance that they would be memorialized in the most caring, dignified, and respectful manner possible. Together, they make up the Allegheny Cemetery family.

Mission

Allegheny Cemetery, historically a rural burial ground, provides a beautiful, respectful resting place for the dead and serves the community as a living tribute to generations past. Our mission is to provide comfort to the families we serve by offering a peaceful environment, an elegant landscape, and a commitment to perpetually honor all of those entrusted to our care.

Very interesting cemetery in terms of architecture, gravestones and mausoleums. Well kept grounds and amazing number of friendly deer walking around. Not to mention the graves...some very elaborate of many famous former Pittsburgh residents reside there now.

Within This "HISTORIC CEMETERY" are MEMBERS of My Family. My Dad has MEMBERS of his FAMILY that are "LAID TO REST" here. My Mom's OLDEST Brother, Along w/ His WIFE are ALSO Here. My Dad's BROTHERS are also "LAID TO REST" Here in the "HISTORIC MILITARY SECTION of the "ALLEGHENY CEMETERY". This CEMETERY is CONSIDERED to be 1 of the MOST BEAUTIFUL PIECES of LAND Within the City Limits of PITTSBURGH. MANY DISTINGUISHED FAMILIES have MEMBERS that are "RESTING IN PEACE here. I used to RIDE MY BIKE thru "ALLEGHENY CEMETERY" on WARM & SUNNY Days w/ Friends. Going Downhill from the PENN AVENUE Entrance to the BUTLER STREET Exit was NICE, but the RIDE UPHILL was sometimes EXHAUSTING. Evening WALKS in the FALL were ENJOYABLE until the CHANGE in DAYLIGHTS SAVINGS TIME & It would get DARKER & thoughts of "GEORGE ROMERO'S ZOMBIES" Scared the LIVING BEJEEBERS Out Of Us.

I love this place. It's great for photography and for looking for Georgian/Victorian/Edwardian era mourning symbolism. I just wish they'd open the gates when it is posted that they will because I like to go here the mornings before work. As for the review about deer hunting, you are not allowed to harm any of the animals here. You will be arrested if you try and it's not funny to joke about. Things are looked after closely here though there is enough peace for solace. Please do not litter. Eben Byers' mausoleum seems to be a target for this. Thanks for reading.
