Story

Animal Emergency and Specialty Center of Reno was established in 1992 to provide veterinary emergency and after hours care for the Truckee Meadows area. The hospital opened with 2 full time veterinarians and a handful of staff. Today we have 9 full time veterinarians, 3 board certified specialist (starting mid-fall of 2017), and over 30 support staff. We are located at 6425 South Virginia Street in south Reno and are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Animal Emergency and Specialty Center’s mission is to provide exceptional emergency, critical care, and specialty services delivered with compassion by dedicated professionals practicing evidence-based, state of the art veterinary medicine.

All of our doctors have taken a special interest in Emergency Medicine and Critical Care. They attend continuing education meetings and spend extra time staying up to date on the latest advances in emergency medicine. We also take a team approach to the management of difficult cases and work together to give each patient the best possible treatment.

We had to take our dog here three in the middle of the night. Both times before I called completely frantic, crying, and everyone calmly talked me through it, gave me multiple options and always made me feel like I wasn't crazy. 

Today we had to make the horrible choice of putting our dog down. One of the girls came out and sat me with me while I cried. That's more than just good customer service, these people are just amazing. I couldn't be more grateful.

Vet automatically said euthanasia. Said couldn’t even get a vital exam didn’t mention vitals heart rate, respiratory rate or even temperature which I asked what they were and no answer.  Short haired vet just wanted to euthanize not even try to give our dog oxygen unless we paid first even though the vet said our poor dog was said was not responding to oxygen then the vet changed her story to “we didn’t even give oxygen” even though our dog was in need due to heavily panting. didn’t even offer heartworm test. I had to ask and she said it is definitely possible heartworm but only if our dog travelled out of town by the way heartworm is a sickness that happens in Reno seen many cases, even though could be a possibility I had to ask and they asked for 75 dollars instead of the usual around 30 dollars.  When euthanizing didn’t even offer sedation before euthanizing then when I asked she said it’s an extra cost. Once euthanizing was in place our dog was still slight movement in body, therefore suffering while dying. The vet didn’t give any slight of compassion and just wanted money never go to this hospital our poor dog was not even completely gone even though she checked heart rate for   Like 2 sec. been to this emergency center before and I will never go back please Reno area community never go to this very poor emergency center save your pet at a different emergency center.  Our hearts are hurt from our dog not getting correct care and then therefore euthanizing wasn’t given enough of drug so our dog suffered even more.

I am so happy with our visit here. We took our dog there for broken nail that needed to be removed. The tech, I believe her name was Kit, was amazing she was very kind and intentive and was great with Duke. Dr. Beal (not sure on spelling) was great as well. He was straight forward and got our doggo fixed up in no time.  It was just an overall great experience. On a sad note I did hear they had to put an animal down and they way they handled it was so amazing. Thank you for being there for us!!!

I love this animal hospital. We thought we were going to have to put down our 11year old female dog (boxer lab pit mix) after she ate items that would not pass through her digestive system. They ended up doing surgery after multiple attempts to get the items to pass naturally. They removed the objects and saved her life! They gave us an honest opinion based off of the review of her blood work and scans of her health so that we could make a decision to do surgery or not. They weren't pushy and were very understanding. They even gave us a deal. My husband has been through deployments away from our dog and she is his best friend so to have a center that cares so much and responded so quickly and honestly, meant a big deal to us. If it weren't for this animal hospital our dog surely would have died. Thank you Animal Emergency Center. The doctor who did our surgery for our dog rylan had a really cool accent and his name was Dr. Atkinson and the tech who helped us through it all was a girl named Heather. One thing I feel like people should keep in mind is the fact that these people work in an emergency center. So yes it will be more expensive than a normal vet visit, but they immediately handle issues and work crazy hours to help the public at all
hours of the night etc and have capabilities normal vet offices would not have. I felt as if it was worth every cent we paid to save our dogs life and she has been doing great ever since then!

I saw Dr. Krista  Cioffi for my 3yo Great Pyrenees's TPLO surgery.  I was referred to this hospital by my vet and had scheduled a few different 'meet and greets' in order to find the place I felt most comfortable.  I was blown away by how patient, kind, knowledgeable, and friendly the entire staff was; however, being reassured and spoken to by Dr. Cioffi is what made me cancel my other meetings and agree to have my dog operated on that day.  She was technical and thorough, showing me the xrays and walking me through the procedure, even including a miniature anatomy lesson.  My dog, Neige, is now nearly fully recovered after 3 months and they have been amazing throughout all of her checkups, post op scans, and xrays.  I HIGHLY recommend this place!
