Story

The Animal Emergency & Referral Center of Minnesota (AERC) was established over 30 years ago by a group of veterinarians who wanted to provide their clients with quality veterinary care during non-business hours.

Animal Emergency & Referral Center started out with one clinic, one veterinarian, and one technician! Over the years, our hospitals have grown, and we highly value the relationships we’ve built with local veterinarians, pets and owners in the many communities we serve. Today, we employ a wide variety of doctors and health care team members – all specially trained in emergency and critical care--in addition to a growing referral practice for when your pet just isn't feeling like himself.

Though we are an emergency practice and will never forget our roots, we are forging a future as the premier referral center in Minnesota. Critical Care, Internal Medicine (including our I-131 Treatment Facility for Hyperthyroid Cats,) Surgery & Rehab, Cardiology, Cancer Care, Dentistry & Oral Surgery, Dermatology, Neurology and Radiology are just some of the services your pets can receive when needed.

All the people here, the atmosphere ... everything about this place is respectful, caring, calm and wonderful.  I've had one very sad visit where my beloved dog was too sick to save and one visit on a Thanksgiving day for a much less severe problem involving my other dog.  I don't know how anyone can make the sorrow of loss go away, but all involved with my dog's passing could not have been more empathetic or caring.   They were also extremely respectful of our needs as far as saying goodbye to her.
Thanksgiving day would be a hard day to find fairly prompt help, but somehow they provided it.  My dog had an infected sore on his paw and they had him in and out in an amazingly prompt way.  
Without hesitation I would immediately take any animal in my care to these people for help in an emergency situation or in a situation that needed attention before my regular vet could be available.  I've never ever experienced such wonderful helpful and kind people.

If you go here and “Dr” Elizabeth Bruns comes into the room, turn around and walk out. She’ll misdiagnose, tell you your dog has cancer (by reading only an ultrasound) and needs immediate surgery, or to be euthanized. She’ll assure you that your dog has this cancer because her cat had the same thing. She’ll tell you your dog has 3 months to live at most after the surgery. You’ll go ahead with the $6,000 surgery and they’ll find nothing. You’ll pay the almost $5,000 bill, get your dog back with 20+ staples and have a long road to recovery. Scare tactics??? Misunderstanding?? I wouldn’t know because Elizabeth Bruns won’t reach out to me. She must be hiding?? I’m filing an official complaint with the Minnesota Board Of veterinary medicine in hopes this “Dr” gets some retraining. Unfortunately I now have to advise people to avoid this place. How many animals have been euthanized senselessly under this woman’s care because she told them they have some horrible disease and it’s an either an expensive surgery or euthanasia?? Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to have a place close by for emergency services but if they’re employing Vets like this, I think I’ll drive further and go elsewhere. I’ve been here on several occasions and always had pleasant experiences and have always gotten a call the next day to see how my pet was doing. Funny, I didn’t get one for this dog and it by far was the worst procedure I’ve had done on any animal of mine there.
I’m doubting that he even needed the surgery. I thought this was a vet clinic not a used car sales lot.. pressure and scare tactics at its finest.

On a Sunday we brought our sweet cat, Reggie, in to be euthanized. He was suffering from a growth in his intestines and in the end could no longer keep down any food and was in great pain. The staff showed great caring & compassion. They gave us time with Reggie and I held him as he peacefully took his last breath. Thankyou for making the clay heart with his paw prints.

Any time we have ever been here we have been well taken care of. This last time we were there however has been the most exceptional. Our 5.5yr old Great Dane was lethargic and going into shock. Not only did they save her life and continue to monitor her all 3 terrifying days. They updated us every step of the way. I swear someone would pop their head in the room every 5-10 minutes when we first got there to keep us up to date on what was happening. Even if the news was the same they made sure we weren’t in the dark. When we weren’t there, someone would call us every 8 hours with an update as well. They let us visit whenever we wanted and as much as we wanted! She had been diagnosed with Addison’s which is not important in this story but she was able to come home. When they sent us home they gave us meds and packets of info on her disease. They walked us through every medication and it’s side affects and have continued to answer all of our questions and calls. They are an amazing place with an amazing team day and night!

I have been here a few times for emergencies with my dogs and the friendliness and caring of all the staff is absolutely wonderful.  The latest visit was for dental work on my 13 year old.  Dr. Vicari was great, explaining things in a way that I could easily understand.  I highly recommend them.
