Story

Grey Towers Castle is a building on the campus of Arcadia University in Glenside, Pennsylvania which is in Cheltenham Township, a suburb of Philadelphia, USA. The castle was designed by Horace Trumbauer and built starting in 1893 as the estate of William Welsh Harrison. The university (then known as Beaver College and located in nearby Jenkintown) purchased the estate in 1929 for $712,500, equal to $ today. Classes were split between the two locations until 1962, when the school moved all of its operations to the Glenside area. The castle was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1985 for its architecture.HistoryIn 1891, William Welsh Harrison, co-owner of the Franklin Sugar Refinery, purchased Rosedale Hall from J. Thomas Audenreid. By 1891, Harrison had expanded his estate to 138acre and decided to expand the house and add a gate house and more adequate stables. He employed the skills of 23-year-old architect Horace Trumbauer, who completed the stables and gate house in 1892.In 1893, the main house of Rosedale Hall burned to the ground in a raging fire, during which the Harrison family fled to the stables for safety. Afterward, the family moved into the gatehouse, while Trumbauer was again employed to build a new home on the site. By March 1893, Trumbauer presented Harrison with plans for a grandiose mansion, inspired by Alnwick Castle, the medieval seat of the Dukes of Northumberland. The new house would include all the most modern conveniences of the time, and the cost was estimated at $250,000, equal to $ today. Work was underway by the end of 1893. The construction took five years.

Prepped for a year to do well enough on the GRE, gain work experience, and crush my interview to gain admission into their physician assistant program...which I did. Even visited the campus before accepting their offer to get an impression of if it was right for me. Well, it was a classic bait and switch [in quality]. The castle ambiance is luring, but the administration and chairs are a soup-sandwich falling apart. Two professors were fine but the rest couldn't separate out their divorced unhappy lives from their duty to teach. Some had a strange understanding of pathophysiology that makes me chuckle 12 years later now that I know better. Plus, they tracked negative feedback on courses by seeing what time your evaluation populated off and when an unnamed new one populated on...so there was no true anonymity. Luckily my academic advisor went to bat for me when I was threatened with expulsion if I ever gave another negative review. It prepared me but I am sure another university would have done so just as well with kinder and more just intent as well as better organization.

I chose to attend Arcadia University in 2009 due to scholarship and study abroad. While I loved my year abroad, my four years at the actual campus were a nightmare. Housing was deplorable; mice, roaches, poorly insulated walls and windows, no security, fire alarms go off weekly, and the apartment building still has original elderly residents who constantly complain and cause issues with the student residents. As mentioned in other reviews the academics at this school are lacking and are not worth the debt you'll go into. The ONLY reason to attend this school is if you have a large college fund and will go abroad every year in order to receive some semblance of a decent education. I wholeheartedly regret attending this university.

The administration is a mess. The best part of this school is being able to study at another school for a semester.

Arcadia Focuses TOO MUCH attention on Study Aboard. They Should Focus On The School Itself. The School Lacks Academically, and they have a POOR REPUTATION. When An Employer Reads Over Your Resume, Studying Board Comes To Mind. My Daughter Chose Not To Attend Arcadia because she value education over everything else. The school needs to get their priorities straight. This school is more like a TRAVELING AGENCY than it is a university. They are #1 in study aboard. WHO CARES? They aren't #1 in anything else. At an ideal school, academics trumps everything else. At Arcadia, your experience in foreign countries will be better than the education you will receive at their school. If you want a good education, I would NOT recommend Arcadia. Also, the school is located on a highway surrounded by fields of weeds. Traffic and privacy are an issue. The area only gets nicer when you head away from campus (toward the shops). AMERICAN UNIVERSITY is a better school. It seems like Arcadia is the KNOCK-OFF version of American.

I have only visited twice and decided that this school was not for me. There is nothing to do on campus and the people were very very unfriendly. It just seemed very.. unhappy there. The students do not seem excited to be there, making the vibe so low. Also, the study abroad program IS impressive, but that is all the school excels at. I was unimpressed by the professors and the administration. Not terrible, but not for me.
