To start off with, I was a Texas peace officer for many years. In the several months I have now lived in Athens, I think I have seen a patrol car actually driving around twice. This town is ghetto and they don't seem to care to do anything about it. 

I constantly have cars booming their music, reverberating through our house, but they are on the main highways, well over 100 feet away. There is no way a patrol would not hear this if they were actually driving around. Athens does have a city ordinance against this and there is also a state law. If you call, they won't do anything. 

I also had to call the animal control once for stray dogs in my backyard. I called in the morning, before I left for work, and when I return later that afternoon the dogs were still loose. I called back and the guy just said he hadn't gone over there yet, with no explanation for why. 

If I would have checked the statistics before hand, I would have known that this town's crime rate is well above the national average, which is sad for a small town. The leadership in this place seems pathetic.
