This man is a disgusting crook. We were mislead that this guy operates a business but then realized he may have a few gigs to make him appear credible but must do this to be able to book other events and run with his customers' deposits. DO NOT TRUST HIM. He stole our deposit of $425. At the beginning of the process... He was very quick and prompted us numerous times to hurry and submit the deposit before he leaves for Vegas. After we sent over the deposit... we had to hunt him down for a confirmation. Then four months later, the week we had our event he would not answer our calls. Once we wrote an email that addressed that my husband is in law enforcement... he called us to tell us that the phones don't work out in Lake Elsinore. Ignored us again that evening. The next day (three days before the event... keep in mind with 80 guests for our event) we receive a text from his wife that he was in an accident with a drunk driver in the hospital. After numerous phone calls even after that... we never received our deposit back. No call back... no email... nothing. We were naive to not read the few bad reviews hidden by numerous "good" reviews. This has happen to many others. Don't be fooled by the good reviews... he is a thief and a liar. Not to mention we had to find a caterer for 80 people two days before the event. I don't enjoy speaking this way about others but really hope no one ever has to go through what we did.

I met up with Matthew about 5 months ago to get a quote about catering for our wedding. We met up at a local Starbucks and he came unorganized. He had the wrong items and prices. We went over everything and decided on a set menu and a price. I gave him a $700 deposit and he tells me to call him about a week prior to the event to give him the final count. Our wedding was this past weekend, August 25. We called, emailed, and texted him to see if everything was okay and what our balance was the week prior. We never hear back from him. Fast forward to our wedding, he shows and sets up and seems very nice. After everyone had ate we decided to ask him about the balance and it turns out to be $700 more than we agreed upon. He blamed us for a lack of communication and we argued at my wedding for who knows how long when we agree to talk about it later. I paid him what I knew our balance was and he left. Our guests later tell us how they were very unfriendly and some of the chicken was RAW! They served raw chicken to our guests! DO NOT USE THEM! They are unprofessional, unorganized, unfriendly, and they do not return your calls, texts, or emails.

My wife and I both had the two meat combo for $16.95 apiece.  Unfortunately,  it was later in the day and the meat was really dry, most of it not worth eating.  The cook obviously knew it wasn't up to par and drenched in bbq sauce to try to make up for the dryness. I guess we should have known when we had to wait 25 minutes for the meal.  We could have gotten 6 tacos at Jack in the Box and had a better meal and save 30 bucks.

Our family in good faith signed a contract and more importantly shook hands and planned a great bar-b-que event. We had to change the date and that is when we discovered this is not a business to plan any events with in the future. Matthew will not return calls or emails. After he has your money he disappears. I am planning legal action to get my deposit back. Beware of this business.

Please be careful before you sign a contract with Matthew Mugica with Backyard Barbecue & Catering.

I've left several voice messages, sent texts and emails to Mathew to reschedule an event but he will not even respond back to me.  Now I would like a refund of $700+ but that request is going unanswered also.  Any suggestions?
