You’ve probably been hearing a lot about periodontal disease in the news. Medical science is making new discoveries routinely that link periodontal problems with many health conditions. It’s been found that gum disease can cause heart problems and pre-term labor in pregnant women.

Early periodontal disease does not cause pain and can go unnoticed. However, early detection and treatment are extremely important. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

Periodontal disease occurs when plaque builds up and irritates the gums, leading to inflammation and infection. This earliest stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. If left untreated, it can progress to the bone, causing periodontitis. Signs of periodontal disease may include:

• Sore and/or bleeding gums
• Tooth movement
• Changes in your bite
• Bad breath or persistent bad taste, or
• Gums that have pulled away from your teeth

In the later stages, the bone and soft tissues that support the teeth are destroyed; the teeth become loose and fall out.
