Owners of Baker’s Dozen Randy and Jill Jensen share their story…..
Baker’s Dozen…..home of the infamous spudnut donuts and the only place we know of that you can get a 13count dozen of donuts that you can pick and choose from a fantastic variety of donuts hand-made from scratch ( as long as you get up early!) Where you can find “Things Done the Old Fashion Way”.
Our Story began 45 years ago, in 1972 when as a recently returned LDS missionary and also a newly - wed husband, Randy Jensen took a job at the Buttrey’s grocery store Bakery on First Street in Idaho Falls, Idaho. There Randy entered the apprenticeship program to become a Journeyman Baker under the guidance and direction of two ancient and original bakers, Ty Barker and Ray Quinton. Randy developed skills in every step of scratch-baking and producing everything from spudnut donuts and cake donuts, breads of all types, sizes and shapes, to pies, dinner and wedding cakes, to cookies, pastries and novelties. Randy’s career took him to 17th street IGA grocery, Fred Meyers bakery manager as well as 20 years bakery owner inside Smith’s Food King on Woodruff as well as the Ridley’s Bakery in Pocatello and as the genius behind the hand mixed and made Bagels at Bagels & Cream in Idaho Falls.
33 years later, in September of 2005 now a Master Baker, Randy Jensen began a new adventure in his own bakery…The Baker’s Dozen, in a little shop at 561 S. Woodruff Ave, in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Five years later Randy hired a book-keeper named Jill whom he had met 21 years prior. Two years later Randy and Jilli married and not only enjoyed baking, creating new donuts together, friendships with their clientele, decorating for the holidays, but art work as well! The bonus to their relationship was the children that they had both raised over the years and the realization that His, Hers and now Ours brought the total of children between the couple to …13! Good friends, John & Karalee Robinson were the first to total the names of these wonderful kids, some grown, some young and bring to Randy and Jilli’s attention that they had a Baker’s Dozen in Kids!
Now twelve years later, Baker’s Dozen has grown into what you see today, a premier specialty bakery in Idaho Falls where every holiday is a tradition and donut connoisseurs order ahead and many folks consider Baker’s Dozen a destination.
Much of The Baker’s Dozen success is due to the help of Randy and Jilli’s friends, LDS missionaries, close relatives, and children; who have worked at the bakery over the years. Many come in for the big holidays every year to help, and others have moved on to school and careers. Some of Randy and Jilli’s children have developed essential positions, one of which is Randy and Jilli’s son Dustin, he has worked the bakery full time since 2011. Under Randy’s directions Dustin has completed an apprenticeship and accomplished his Journeyman Baker. Dustin has also improved all the technical support systems in the bakery including the square processing and our online Facebook page. Dustin also uses his talents in photography to represent the bakery and the family and is truly the youthful future of The Baker’s Dozen family legacy with his sisters. Randy and Jill confidently leave the bakery with Dustin and the crew when a well deserved vacation time can be enjoyed!
We look forward to working and serving our clientele with bakery goods made from scratch, enjoying friendships old and new and all the yearly traditions we all look forward to throughout the coming years!
