This is more than just a review of this particular bank, but by reviewing here it might improve something of the business practices. The people at the bank have treated me cordially. Friday, June 30 I wrote checks from my partnership to my corporation and from my corporation to me personally. It was near the end of the day, so I headed to the banks. We were also leaving for vacation for 10 days on Saturday, so we needed the funds in our personal account to cover bills for the next 10 day. Deposited check in drive-up ATM machine at Bank of America. Machine took check, then immediately displayed “This ATM is temporarily out of service” It did return my ATM card but not my check. I went inside the bank to ask them to retrieve the check. The manager told me they had no access to the ATM. I was told that I needed to file a claim. I could go online and get the number. Of course, I threw up my hands in frustration. Here is where the local manager went wrong. She should have told me to forget it and that my only hope was to get another check. I headed to Rabobank where I have my professional corporate account to make my primary monthly deposit there from my business partnership. I was due to meet my wife, Barbara, at Momma’s House where she was a hostess for their open house. Upon leaving Rabobank, I decided to give Bank of America’s claim line a try. I was on hold for 55 minutes, essentially using up all the time I was supposed to be visiting at the open house. Every two minutes a message came on thanking me for holding and that my call would be answered in turn. I was never told how long it could be or whether the lines were "manned" late of a Friday. So, not even knowing if anyone was still answering at BofA this late on a Friday, I hung up. Barbara and I went to dinner. Once home, I tried BofA Claims again. This time, they answered after 25 minutes. I was told that a claim would be filed and that if I had not heard from them within 10 business days I should call back. I was told that they might forgive any overdraft charges, but they could not do anything about charges from creditors whose ACH charges didn’t go through. I was just a bit frustrated, because I was leaving town for 10 days. On the following Wednesday, July 5, I decided to try BofA again while I was on the road. I was on hold for half an hour before I lost cell contact. On Friday, July 7, I tried BofA again. They told me my claim had been turned over to their Fraud Unit (whys?). Before my call was forwarded to the Fraud Unit, I was told that it could take 45 days to hear on my claim and that they were trying to get ahold of the vendor. I asked who the vendor was and they said, “The person who wrote the check.” I informed the person that that was me (my professional corporation)!!! I was transferred to the Fraud Unit where my call was disconnected after 20 minutes on hold. Of course, I also spent time checking my account every day that I had cell service. Barbara (who was with family in Texas) spent a lot of time juggling our automatic payments to make sure we didn’t have anything go through too soon. July 10. I spent my 30 minute lunch hours transferring $5000 cash from my business account to BofA account so Barbara could make payments prior to late charges. I stopped payment on the prior $8000 check written on the Rabobank account. I also asked Rabobank for personal checking account applications for myself and my wife. I still have no communication initiated by BofA and have never been given a claim number. So far, I have shared this experience in person with about 25 people. I expect the list to grow. My business thrives on excellent service. I would expect a big company to try for the same.
