Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception

About

The Basilica of the National Shrine is a National Sanctuary of Prayer and Pilgrimage as designated by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Story

Designated by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops as a National Sanctuary of Prayer and Pilgrimage, the Basilica is the nation’s preeminent Marian shrine, dedicated to the patroness of the United States—the Blessed Virgin Mary under her title of the Immaculate Conception. It is oftentimes affectionately referred to as America’s Catholic Church.

Visited by Pope Benedict XVI, Pope John Paul II, and Mother Teresa, among others, the Basilica, though distinctly American, rivals the great sanctuaries of Europe and the world.

Mission

The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, a Catholic church dedicated to the patroness of our nation, is a place of worship, pilgrimage, evangelization and reconciliation. It offers visitors the occasion for a deepening conversion, a step forward in the journey to God, with Mary as the model for that journey. This monumental church, raised by Catholics of the United States because of their devotion to Mary the Mother of God, gives visibility to their faith and Catholic heritage. Mary’s Shrine invites people from across the country and beyond into the saving moment of faith, hope and charity, so that they may be reconciled and transformed into living symbols of Christ’s presence in the world. It is here that the faithful gather to worship God, give honor to Mary, and are sent to spread God’s word wherever they go.

The Basilica is a beautiful, incredible, prayerful place. I am grateful for all the opportunities for worship, every day, from Mass to Confession to Adoration to the Rosary. Daily Mass is available at the following times: 7:00, 7:30, 8:00, 8:30 am; 12:15 and 5:15 pm Daily Confession: 7:45-8:15 am; 10:00 am - 12:00 pm; 3:30 - 6:30 pm. There is a newly consecrated Rosary Garden across from the Church, and as many Marian chapels as you could want! The Trinity Dome was also recently completed, which is beautiful. Truly a "crowning jewel". I have included some images of the Shrine at various times of the year and from various angles, the Rosary Garden, the Chapel of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and the Upper Church during Christmastime, an especially beautiful period where this Shrine celebrates fully the birth of Christ!

I visited during a Friday. I had bad luck with the tour guide - he was the worst guide I have ever had. He spoke very unclear and extremely fast, paying no attention to his audience. He would utter a few sentences in a certain shrine, than run off - we would find him in the next alcove, talking to himself about what was to be seen there, as none of the visitors had reached it yet. The building itself and all in it was very impressive. Richly decorated. Moreover, there was no need for the translations from Latin as I am used to in Europe, as most inscriptions are in English. As the entrance and tours are free, I would rate it 4 stars. Not 5, as some of Europe's cathedrals are just quite a bit more impressive.

Beautiful and reverent. Welcoming staff. Very big yet very personal. Stop for services or just stop to pray. Don't miss the crypt church. I'm not Catholic and I really enjoyed it.

Happy Holidays and may The Lord, Jesus Christmas our Saviour and The Blessed Virgin Mary watch over and protect ye whom read herein. As a child, my Mother brought me to Shrine mass a few times and from the first time I beheld this beautiful church, at age 3yrs., it was destined to become my favorite religious structure! Now, as a grown man, working in the Basilica as a Security Officer, I can honestly report, it remains to this day, my favorite building, let alone, my favorite church. Everyday, I witness visitors become overcome emotionally and moved to tears as they pray to the Holy Mother Mary for comfort, solice or protection. It should definitely be on every Roman Catholic's Pilgrimage Bucket List before they are called home by God our Father. God Bless you all.
