Beavertail Lighthouse Museum

Story

Beavertail Lighthouse, built in 1856, was and still is the premier lighthouse in Rhode Island, United States, marking the entrance to Narragansett Bay. The 64ft lighthouse lies on the southernmost point of Conanicut Island in the town of Jamestown, Rhode Island in Beavertail State Park, on a site where beacons have stood since the early 18th century. The Whistle House and Garage were destroyed by the New England Hurricane of 1938. The light provides navigation for boats and ships entering Narragansett Bay in the East Passage between Conanicut Island and Newport, Rhode Island on Aquidneck Island. Other lighthouses, such as Castle Hill Lighthouse, Point Judith Light, and Rose Island Light are visible from Beavertail Lighthouse. Its white light rotates counterclockwise and makes a full rotation in about six or seven seconds. The light is on 24 hours per day with a rotation every 6 seconds, unlike many lighthouses that are near it. It has a loud foghorn that blasts about every 30 seconds during the fog.

My review is more about Beavertail State Park than the museum there. I loved hiking along this beach park - there are rocks, huge rocks, all along the cost line on either side of the beautiful lighthouse there, and they are GREAT for hiking! I've also had a few picnics out on the rocks along the coast of the park. I've seen people painting, set up on the rocks; there are some great photography opportunities here; and, as I mentioned previously, some great hiking to be had here! I love this park! Beware of the wind though! It's almost always very windy at this park because of ocean coastline along a semi-peninsula. The horn for the lighthouse can also be deafening at times, but if you're there for hiking, then the noise is far enough away to not bother you, depending on where you are in relation to the lighthouse. I've also see tons of sailboats, and even a few tall ships all along the ocean waters surrounding the park. The lighthouse museum is fairly nice and curator is a wonderfully kind old man, who is always willing to spend the time answer any questions you might have, or to tell the history of the Beavertail Lighthouse. There is also a small aquarium in the building next to the lighthouse that houses many of the different species that you can find living naturally in and around the water surrounding the lighthouse and park. The whole place is really just a wonderful place to visit and I highly recommend it!

What a fantastic place. Lots of picnic areas, the ocean on three sides, reasonable toilet facilities and a lighthouse to boot. We had a day with all our children and grandchildren at the beginning of August. Someone, who's name I won't mention, thought I, I mean he could go without sunscreen. There was a lobster at the coast that day.😃

A hidden gem on Narragansett Bay. The Beavertail Lighthouse, surrounding grounds, fantastic views, charming lighthouse museum and adjoining kid-friendly hands-on "aquarium" are a terrific way to spend a few hours almost any day, but especially in good weather. Bring your lawn chairs, picnic, kites, Frisbee, dogs, binoculars, cameras, etc. Nice areas for climbing on rocks. No good places for swimming, but in a few places you can get down to the water to splash in tidal pools or gravel "beaches." Lots of parking and it's all free! Plan ahead to visit on a day when the lighthouse is open to climb to the top.

I am an avid lover of lighthouses and the trip I took to Jamestown as a child is a fond memory. We walked the length of the island to get to Beavertail Point and saw quaint neighborhoods and friendly folks along the way.
