The only regret I had was not being able to read the stories on every gravestone in the Bellefontaine Cemetery. The cemetery is very well maintained and the most beautiful cemetery I've ever been! I can't wait to come visit again.
This is maybe my favorite place in the city. I once saw "The other forest park" written on an event sign there. In my opinion it is "The better Forest Park." As an avid history and architecture enthusiast I'm in heavenpardon the expression at this cemetery. Shockingly beautiful and just plain cool!
A beautiful cemetery with an arboretum. Quiet and large enough to have privacy. They provide free services for families dealing with the loss of a newborn which is a kindness and a load off of a terrible loss.
Beautifully kept, tons of history! They do tours which tell you of all the wonderful history. Plus if you are a geocacher there are numerous geocaches.
Took a tour of the a Level II Accredited Arboretum and learned history of St. Louis. Bellefontaine has an accessible and diverse horticultural collection, and has become an important natural sanctuary and habitat for wildlife in the urban environment. It is the only accredited arboretum in the city of St. Louis. I found that the Bellefontaine’s grounds are home to an international variety of meticulously cared-for trees and shrubs, providing a changing landscape every season. Until the mid-twentieth century, Bellefontaine Cemetery was home to a greater variety of trees than the Missouri Botanical Garden. I learned that they have over 1,100 shrubs and over 5,000 trees represent over 200 distinct varieties.
This is the most amazing place! So much history, absolutely stunning sculpture and statuary, not to mention all of the beautiful landscape! Truly a gem of St. Louis. They do all kinds of fun historical tours and events and there is still a ton of space for burials if you fall in love like we did!
Most beautiful old Cemetery in St. Louis. A visit here is like a visit to the art museum.
As a former Security Officer, I'm very impressed on how well maintained this cemetery is. It appears that every effort is made to make sure the Cemetery is preserved and respect and keeping it clean & improve where possible. The biggest thing now days that bothers me. The fact you have to have Security for any cemetery from vandalism. I do admit,, that when I originally started working at the cemetery, I was kind of creepy out.. it didn't help with some wild animals that only seem to come out in the night time. But as time gone. It didn't bother me much. And seemed a place to be at peace because of the care the cemetery has done. I no longer work there. They contract with a security service that I no longer trust caring for there employees only self imagine & money.
One of my absolute favorite places to go on a walk in St. Louis. There is an infinite amount of history and architecture.
