For the average person, I recommend purchasing on-line or through a big box store. I bought a camera as a gift and received great service in the store. However, upon returning the camera they would not accept it as the plastic sleeve the cords were in and the sleeve for the camera were not included. This is there policy, it's fine, it protects them and they will not make exception. You don't not run into this issue with on-line purchases (ie amazon) or large/high volume sellers. Unless you are a photo-enthusiast or professional, you can get the same service in a big box retailer with a little on-line research and get the benefit of a more flexible return policy.

I've gone twice there. The first time they had exactly what I was looking to buy. Spare battery and battery grip. The second time, I called ahead of time to verify that I could rent a lens for the September 2015 total lunar eclipse. The man I spoke with assured me that there would be one of two lens on hold for me. When I got there, I find nothing on hold for me, neither of the two lens they carried and the "owner" of the store was willing to rent me his with a $2000, just in case, deposit. They offered no rental insurance. Next time, I am renting online mainly because the online store I looked at originally offered $9 damage insurance. I would have to pay for shipping  but It would be worth saving the 30 minute drive and the aggregation.

I've visited this place many times and always have a great experience with the staff. They know a lot about the camera equipment and the different uses according to each company and will give me their opinions on the good and the bad of each item. Their recommendations are honest and straight to the point and won't weasel in any additional spending as they understood my kind of budget as an amateur photographer. My recent purchase was a Black Rapid Yeti strap and a Canon 6D. Yes, they were sold to me at a retail price, because this store is an authorized camera dealer. I still get all the perks of instant rebates, mail-in-rebates and much more just like B&H and Adorama. There is no difference between these places except for one: Berger Bros. is never crowded and their staff is incredibly nice, and there's free parking regardless of what you spend.

Proper old skool camera shop, excellent customer service. Sold me Magmod flash modifiers which really met my expectations set by the sales lady.. I'll be back..

Without exception, the best camera store I have ever been to.  Even when they are busy, they spend however much time you need, to answer your questions and make sure you get the right product.  Most of the stuff I buy now is not expensive, so I don't really shop prices, but the few times I did ask (like when buying an expensive lens or camera body), if their price was higher (which it usually is not), they come down to the competitive number.
They have two stores, Amityville and Syosset.  I usually go to Syosset because it is closer to my job, and the store is usually less busy.  All pro's in Syosset behind the counters.  However, because Amityville is larger, I think it has a slightly wider selection of accessory equipment to choose from.
