Organized in 1896, we have been proudly protecting the people of Jessup for over 121 years.
The first meeting of Jessup Hose & Engine Company No.1 occurred on Wednesday January 15th,1896 at Costello's hotel on Church Street. Michael Barrett was elected the Company's inaugural president. Soon after, the Company purchased It's first fire apparatus, a hose wagon, for $300. The wagon was stationed at Costello's hotel barn. The first fire the Company fought took place on may 11th, 1896 at the Delaware Hotel. In January of 1921, the Company purchased It's first motorized apparatus, a White brand fire truck. However, a dispute between the Borough Council and the Company occurred and the truck was given to the newly formed Hose Company No. 2. In 1934, due to the Great Depression, the Hose Company defaulted on it's payments and lost both fire trucks and the fire hall itself. Despite this, the Hose Company remained active, and by 1946, had purchased a brand new building and Ford pumper, affectionately known as "sparky". In the years following The Second World War, Jessup Hose and Engine Company No. 1 experienced a rebirth, and became on of the most active fire stations in Lackawanna County. In 1996, we celebrated 100 years of protecting the people of Jessup.
