Story

Briarwood Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center is an outstanding Community of Care conveniently located down the block from Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham. As a registered Eden Alternative™ facility, our signature Eden approach can be felt throughout our neighborhoods, as we focus on placing the needs and preferences of our residents and families above all else.

We have been highly successful at keeping our rate of rehospitalization down and have attained a 5 star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), meeting and exceeding their standards of quality care. According to recent State Surveys – overall satisfaction at Briarwood Healthcare exceeded ALL other facility averages in our area.

Our multidisciplinary team is comprised of medical professionals who are easily approachable & always accessible, providing residents’ families with an exceptional comfort level as they are involved in all aspects of care.
Our Short-Term Rehabiliation and Long-Term Care Neighborhoods are under the expert supervision of Medical Directors Dr. John V. Temte & Dr. Michael J. Fuller, with a Nurse Practitioner onhand to augment their practice. Our secure Alzheimer’s & Dementia Care neighborhood is overseen by its own dedicated Medical Director – Dr. Sumer Verma. To assure an uninterrupted continuum of care, we have a special Weekend Manager covering Saturdays and Sundays.

We believe that consistent staffing is key to assuring all around better continuity of care. This translates into residents having the same direct caregiver at all times – fostering a relationship of familiarity and trust. Our family of staff members is comprised of outstanding and dedicated individuals, many whom have been a part of Briarwood for a number years.

All the employees deserve a big WOW !!! I couldn't begin to recall everyone's name, but I will say they are all committed to your care, always a wonderful smile, great sense of humor, passionate about what they do, a real family feel to the facility. Everyone was always in a good mood and more than happy to meet any reasonable request as long as it was good for your treatment plan. I want to thank each and everyone from operations, administrative, food service, environmental services, Housekeeping, EVERYONE for their commitment to my well-being and assuring my care and needs were being met. Everyone works so well together with a team spirit. That's what Briarwood is really about!!! Paul Van Wart

We had a very disheartening experience at Briarwood with my father. The clear cut feeling we got from the majority of the staff from nurses to aides to physical therapists was one of annoyance that they had to take care of my dad. He did require extra assistance as he was very immobile but we had met with Amanda before he was transferred there and described his status and needs very clearly and we were reassured that it would not be a problem. However, it was a huge problem such that we arrived one afternoon to find him sitting in his wheelchair in the hallway with a puddle of urine under his chair as they had not assisted him to the bathroom all day. On a positive note, the kitchen staff extremely helpful and attentive. There were two outstanding aides who actually seemed to care as well as some of the PT staff and perhaps 1-2 nurses. I would not recommend Briarwood for anyone who needs anything other than very brief, routine, straightforward PT.

Our experience at Briarwood Rehabilitation was mostly positive. The facility is very homey. Amanda in marketing, Kara in nursing, Sasha and Danielle in Physical Therapy, and Yva and the young men helping in the dining room were all exceptional. The food offered is very appropriate for older residents. They often offer extra choices that are made easier to chew for people who need that help. The staff is very attentive and kind to the residents. One key to having a good experience is to stay involved with your loved one. Family is welcomed and treated well. The memory care unit should have less residents, because these people need more care and a better staff to patient ratio. People who need memory care, but are higher functioning, should be brought out to enjoy activites with other residents. They need to be escorted, so a better staff to patient ratio, would help achieve this and would be kind to those people who could benefit by being included outside that unit.

DO NOT GO TO THIS FACILITY. This facility and the staff nearly killed my father. The bathroom was covered in urine when we arrived and on another occasion the room floor was covered in urine and housekeeping had not been called. The staff failed to give appropriate medications to my father and in fact skipped doses. Most were rude, demeaning and rough with the patients. On one occasion, my mother arrived to my father screaming at the top of his lungs in pain when a PCA was pulling his foley out. She wasn't not responding to his pleas to stop. After we complained to the charge nurse on 2 separate occasions, staff spoke in creole so we couldn't understand them. There isn't a doctor in sight. I even called to speak with the medical director and was told he does not have a phone number at the facility but "if you want to look into getting another number for him go ahead." The "medical team" listed on the website seem to have little, if any contact with patients. We had to demand that an ambulance pick up my father and bring him to the ER. He had pneumonia, low sodium from lack of nutrition, a fever, extremely high blood sugar which was not appropriately treated and he was entirely unable to walk and had significant cognitive decline. All of these symptoms have significantly resolved while under hospital care. The nurses are entirely rude and incompetent. When my dad was being loaded onto the ambulance they were laughing. It is a shame that human beings are treated this way at the end of their lives. I don't know how management or staff can live with themselves. Another family member we spoke to there was also very concerned about the care and our primary care doctor had her own parent taken out of there by ambulance. I have NO IDEA how such a terrible place can have a 4 star rating but I have a good deal of career expertise working with hospitals and step down care and this was unacceptable. It is a nice facility and nice neighborhood from the outside but please do not let that fool you.
