Calvert Marine Museum

About

The CMM Fossil Club (CMMFC) sponsors field trips to fossil collecting sites, regular meetings, public lectures, and fossil fairs. No prior experience in paleontology is needed.

Story

Meetings are scheduled on a quarterly basis on Saturdays and begin promptly at 1:00 PM in the conference room on the top floor of the CMM. All meetings are open to the public - you do not have to be a current CMMFC member to attend a meeting. Members are encouraged to come early to see the new on-goings at the CMM and to bring and set-up their own recent fossil finds. Various related fossil topics, club issues, etc. are discussed at the meetings, as well as updates from the Paleo Staff of the CMM on recent finds and new additions to the Museum's permanent collection. Whenever possible, these new items will be on display. Beverages and snacks are usually provided and additional "finger food" contributions are always appreciated. Meetings are usually an hour to an hour and a half in length and are, whenever possible, followed by a free public lecture by a visiting distinguished guest in the auditorium downstairs.

Visit this museum on Solomans Island if you can. Make sure to check out all the aquariums. My favorite had skates swimming around. Don't miss the otter habitat and the lighthouse outside. The best fossil collection I've seen outside of the Smithsonian. Congratulations to Calvert county and the state of Maryland. If you are anywhere in southern Maryland do yourself a favor and go see this museum.

I loved it here, there were tons of exhibits to see, interactive displays, live animals including the ray tank which was awesome. It gives a lot of history for the area, Maryland, and the mid Atlantic region. I would say the gift shop could be a tad cheaper, and have a large kids exhibit and area but there was enough where the kids were able to stay entertained.

What a fantastic museum. Full of stuff to see and lots of fun activities for the kids. Definitely worth our nearly two hour drive to go!

Fantastic place to visit. It was a surprise to find that there was a small aquarium inside with different kind of fish. The otters were really cute. The lighthouse was very interesting and the guide who showed it to us was super nice also all the staff were very welcoming. The ladies at the store were super helpful, the t-shirts are the best.
