Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum

About

www.cbmm.org On the Miles River in St. Michaels, Md. Whether you are from here or visiting, we bring you closer to the Chesapeake Bay in authentic ways.

Please note: Campus is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Years Day.

Story

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and exploring the history, environment and people of the Chesapeake Bay; and the values of relevancy, authenticity, and stewardship guide us in every aspect of our work. With a park-like setting of outdoor and indoor exhibitions in the historic town of St. Michaels, CBMM offers changing exhibits, demonstrations, boat rides on the Miles River, and annual festivals celebrating Chesapeake Bay culture, boats, seafood, and history.

CBMM’s floating fleet of historic Chesapeake Bay watercraft is the largest in existence and its small boat collection includes crabbing skiffs, workboats, and log canoes. Real shipwrights building authentic Chesapeake wooden boats are part of the Museum experience, and they are available to share the heritage of traditional boatbuilding with guests.

There’s one thing you won’t find at CBMM, however—any signs that say “Do not touch.” That’s because the Museum creates and encourages a memorable, hands-on experience in all of its permanent exhibits, making it a fun place for all ages to visit time and again.

Rediscover the fun of playing on the Bay; take in beautiful, changing exhibits in the Steamboat Building; climb atop the historic 1879 Hooper Strait Lighthouse; learn about the heritage of oystering and waterfowling; get your hands dirty pulling up a crab pot or nippering for oysters at Waterman’s Wharf; or enroll in the Apprentice for a Day program and experience traditional wooden boatbuilding in the Museum’s working boat yard. Museum members even have docking privileges along CBMM’s harbor front campus. For more information, visit CBMM in St. Michaels or on the web at www.cbmm.org.

Had a great time last week with my wife and dog. It was after hours, the staff was friendly and let us walk around the grounds with our puppy. We cannot say they allow dogs for sure when it is open, but there is still a lot to see after close,as long as the lingering staff permits you on property. They sell donated boats that are in nice shape , so that's a huge plus. The proceeds help the bay.

This was a great museum a lot of history about the people who lived on the Chesapeake Bay, crabbing and oyster harvesting. Beautiful area we went on a sunny day. This would be fun for kids

If you visit St. Michaels, you have to visit this museum. One of the most unique experiences one can experience. With several different exhibits and a restored Chesapeake lighthouse, it makes for a wonderful time. They also have a rotating exhibit building which features many new and amazing photographs, paintings, and other collections. Ticket prices are worth it, especially since they are good for two days. Super fun for kids.

Is well worth the visit as we drove 40 minutes each way to see it. It is not just one museum as we had thought but a collection of museums and a lighthouse that had been moved to the museum grounds. The lighthouse is really special as you can walk up the spiral staircase inside and they have the living quarters and personal belongings of the person that manned the lighthouse just as they had been long ago. The museums are fantastic with many old wooden fishing & crabbing boats used long ago with a short description of the history of each. Also are many other very interesting artifacts from the fishing and crabbing days on the Chesapeake Bay. There is also a real working boatyard where you can actually see wooden boats being built. We were staying on Kent Island this time but had stayed at Annapolis on our previous visit and didn't know it at the time, but there is a ferry from Annapolis to the museum. If you are visiting the Chesapeake Bay area, you do not want to miss this museum & lighthouse.

Saint Michael's is overhyped and overpriced. There is good everywhere we go on Earth, but this is a one time visit. Sailing Vessel Sandy Claws. Way too many snobs from the DC area have corrupted this community.
