What do you get when you mix comics with the best coffee in Des Moines? Capes Kafe! Capes is my daily morning (and often evening) stop for an iced latte. The drink menu is large and quite unique. Capes also offers a wide variety of milk substitutes. I mention that because my wife loves those options. My drink tastes the same every time, which never happens at a national chain.

On the comics side, Capes Kafe excels as well. They offer a discounted pull list (pre order) and a great selection on the wall each week. They've been my exclusive shop (including 2 previous locations) for comics for probably 6 years now. You won't find more knowledgeable owners than Curt or Kyle either when it comes to comic storylines, writers, and artists. I'm always blown away by the information they throw out in conversation.

A great stop for comics and coffee, located in the Des Moines Social Club, there certainly lots to do here or nearby. Since I work downtown I'll walk over on Wednesdays to get the new comics that week. They have a table full of back issues and two large shelves of trade paperbacks/graphic novels. They don't have copious amounts of comics like some comic shops do, but the staff are great and willing to help or order for you. Taking the time to learn about their preorder system is well worth it (basically reading Previews and emailing them). They have weekly specials for mochas and such, but the plain black coffee is great. A great store and staple to the Des Moines area!
