I had previously written a review several months ago, but I recently deleted my old google account and got a new one. I feel it necessary to re-post a review for Capital Pre-Owned in hopes that other potential buyers won't fall victim to their ways. I bought a 2009 Subaru Legacy from them. I thought I was being smart and had them put it on the lift for me to look underneath. Everything looked pretty good except for a small oily leak on the bottom of the engine. They claimed it was residual oil from a recent oil change. They said they would clean the area well and run the engine to see if the leak persisted. When I went in to pick up the car and do the paper work, they said there was no more leaking and I was good to go. Fast forward about a month. The pathetic 1000 mile/1 month warranty has just expired, and I've taken my car into my regular mechanic for a slight scrapping noise in the brakes. My mechanic calls me up and tells me I need new pads and rotors on all four wheels, I need a right front wheel bearing, and my power steering rack is leaking. I had him show me exactly where the power steering rack was leaking, and sure enough it was the exact same leak I had noticed before buying the car. I asked my mechanic if the leak could have been mistaken for residual oil from an oil change, and he said not unless the person looking at it was completely clueless. My mechanic also said that the brakes were well below 50% and that any honest car dealer would have replaced them before selling the car. The final bill for all the repairs was well over $1000 on a car I had only made one payment on so far. I called Todd, the General Manager, thinking he would be reasonable considering he knew that I had noticed the leak before even buying that car. He said to bring it on in. We put it up on the lift and I showed him exactly where the leak was. He agreed that it should have been fixed before I bought the car. He said he would have to check with his boss and get back to me. After about two weeks of me calling him and Todd coming up with excuses and not giving me an answer, I decided to write it off. Now I just tell anyone who asks me about the car not to do business with Capital Pre-Owned. If you do decide to do business with them, just remember these important tips from my own experience and from other peoples'; 1) Don't trust anything their mechanics say, 2) Don't trust anything Todd says, 3) Know what your buying and what it's value is (they had my car listed $1000 over NADA value), 4) Don't expect them to do anything for you after you drive off the lot, 5) Don't expect the car to be 100% mechanically sound when you buy it. You will probably end up putting some money into it after buying, so get them as low as you can on the price. Good luck folks!

This organization is without repute. Clever enough to give themselves a 5 star review, however. That is why I decided to weigh in. I bought a car from these folks over 20 years ago. The sales person failed to ask me if my trade-in was a salvage title, and as a result, they attempted to extort me for the entire cost of the car...I managed to leverage the folks at the DMV to negotiate an additional $1500.00 for the car I purchased, much to Capital's disappointment. The organization is crooked, don't deal with them. And their service department is clueless, never got one diagnosis correct on my car. I ended up getting it serviced in St. Albans.

I could write a long email about how great their service is, but I will just say everytime I have came in for a service or a question they have always taken care of me. They are hands on and willing to talk even if they are not doing the work, and I appreciate that. I have read the other reviews on here and have to say I have never experienced and of that. Nothing but the best when I stop in. Keep up the good work guys!

This place is a joke ran by some people that don't really no what they are doing. The service department is a joke as well. I bought a 08 f250 there within a couple weeks my truck was leaking oil. So I got on my phone and they told me to bring it in. Went right through it. Said it was a value cover seal. I said I wasn't gonna pay for it because supposedly they have a 1 month 1 thousand mile warranty so they said they would pay half witch is a load of crap. I get there at 10 am in the morning. They said it would only be a hour or 2. So I'm waiting there and waiting there. Mind you I'm from middlebury witch is about a hour drive and I have work at 5pm. It's coming up on 3:30pm and I go see the status on my truck. They had the whole truck torn apart and said that it was the wrong seal they got. Now I'm pissed and I have to get back to work with no vehicle. So one of the half way decent sales guys gives me a ride back. They said they would have it down to my work that night witch they did. I got into it after they delivered it back. When I got into the truck I smelt a musty smell almost like sweat. Then I looked under my seat only to discovered a opened condom rapper witch was definitely not there prior to me bringing it there. So I was very upset about that. They called me a few days later to wonder when I was gonna come up and pay. I told the service department that they can go to hell and they weren't going to get a penny out of me. A few days later I noticed my truck was still leaking oil. And still is to this day but I will never deal with this company and I recremend anyone looking for any kind of vehicle to look somewhere else because there are scums born everyday. This dealership is worse then scum. They are lucky I don't sue.

Capital Pre-Owned is the epitome of the stereotypical car dealership. I brought the vehicle I was interested in to a local mechanic to see if everything checked out before following through with the purchase. They informed me that the car needed front brakes and rotors, tires, and a rear driver's side brake caliper due to the emergency brake not holding at all. The mechanic and myself both found the lack of a functioning emergency brake odd considering how the vehicle had just been inspected by Capital Pre-Owned. I would consider this imperative on a car with a 5-speed manual transmission. First red flag. Back at the dealership, I agree to buy the car if the front brakes and emergency brake are both addressed. They agree to repair the car mechanically, but they refuse to throw on a different set of tires. Despite the fact that the tires, along with the emergency brake, shouldn't have passed inspection. The owner of the dealership claimed that new tires had been installed on the vehicle before it was inspected. Clearly disingenuous and deceitful. It was quite a claim considering how the tries were visibly worn and more than likely came with the car when it rolled onto the lot. Second red flag. This is the moment I should have walked, but I decided to sign the paperwork. I return the next day to pick up the car. Everything appears to be squared away, and they claim to have replaced to rear drivers side caliper and that the emergency brake is in working order. After driving off the lot, it was apparent that they had not fixed the emergency brake. When engaged, the car rolled forward or backwards on even the slightest incline. Upon inspecting the rear caliper, it was clear that Capital's shop had installed a used, rusted brake caliper that was partially seized and not contacting the rotor fully. I call Todd, the General Manager, about the problem and he tells me to bring the car in. While the car was on the lift, they have me go and look at it with the mechanic. I point out the state of the brake caliper they replaced. The mechanic says that the seals are new and that brake calipers rust quickly. In one day? With no rain? Right. I was born at night, but it wasn't last night. Todd states they're going to look into the problem, price a few parts, and that he'll call me back by 4:30 that afternoon. Shockingly enough, the call never comes in that day. No call the next morning, either. I call Capital in the afternoon and ask to speak with Todd. His disposition towards me had completely changed and he had elected to conduct the phone call with a brash and aggressive tone. He informs me that they're is nothing else they can do on a car I only paid 6,000 for. Keep in mind that what I'm asking for is a functional emergency brake, which is required by law for a state inspection; which they had already done. This car also allegedly came with a 30 day, 1000 mile warranty, which isn't even worth the paper it's written on. Before I had made the phone call, I had found what their technicians couldn't; the rear passengers tire was spinning freely with the emergency brake engaged. This brake caliper would also have to be replaced, and I inform Todd of the situation during the phone call. He states that they can only do a 50/50 split on the parts and labor. What!? I have to pay to make the car they sold legal? They overcharged me on the price of the brake caliper, which in reality, didn't make it a "50/50" split. I reluctantly agree because I am looking to be done with this dealership. Capital Pre-Owned is a prime example of everything that is wrong with the used car buying experience. They are deceptive and will say and do anything to get you in a vehicle. Even if that requires illegally inspecting sub-par vehicles that have no right to be on the road in their current condition. They can't even conduct themselves in a manner that maintains the minimal legal threshold. I strongly recommend you drive right by this establishment, and look elsewhere for your next car.
