Story

Hubbard Park, located in the Hanging Hills of Connecticut, is a wooded, mountainous park located just outside the city center of Meriden, Connecticut. It comprises approximately 1800acre of carefully kept woodlands, streams, dramatic cliff faces, flower gardens, and the James Barry bandshell and picnic spots, as well as its showpiece, Mirror Lake. The park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.HistoryMost of the land was given to the town by Walter Hubbard, president of the Bradley & Hubbard Manufacturing Company. In his donation, the land was given outright, with the stipulation that everything connected with the park was to remain free of charge for the people of Meriden, and that no concessions for profit were ever allowed within the park area.Hubbard spent a great deal of time and energy creating the park. He personally spent between $400,000 and $500,000 to clear land, build roads, and construct Mirror Lake with the help of Frederick Law Olmsted, who is best known for designing New York City's Central Park. Hubbard built a tower on East Peak, known as Castle Craig, to resemble the towers built by the Turks along the Danube River in the 12th century.According to local folklore, Hubbard Park is said to be haunted by the ghostly presence of the Black Dog of the Hanging Hills (see Hanging Hills).

This is an amazing place to visit in the fall. Time it carefully, though. The access road closes for the season on 10/31 and it's really a park for a ride through, unless you want to hike uphill for miles. Driving you reach the top in about 10 minutes (through beautiful forests and in view of lakes) - and then are treated to a stunning view (all the way to Long island sound and down into neighboring valleys) and, of course, this stacked rock castle turret sitting on top of a outcrop. It's strange and wonderful. You can walk up the creepy metal stairs. It's basic and dungeon-ish but cool. Easy way to have an adventure. Do it!

My wife and I just walked the whole road to the top from the park. We park our car at the gate to the road to Castle Craig. It took us 4 hours of walking an stopping along the way to take some great pictures. That was up and back. It's not a castle, more like a tower with a stairway inside. You can get great views at the top. You can see New Haven if clear, Sleeping Giant Mountain. There are trails for hiking or you can drive to the top. The both of us are 65 and we did great. The gate to the road opens at 10 am and closes I think at 4:45. The gates stays closed for the season in November at some point. But you can still hike up, but use caution in bad weather.

Absolutely breathtaking views from the top. Once inside the castle you will see a stairway leading you to the top. It is not handicap accessible but the views are just as great from the bottom as well(:

First time in Connecticut. Traveled to see Salem, Boston, New York and the turning of the leave. From the park below to the top, spent over 2 hours admiring the view. Didn't realize how time flew until we were leaving.

Meriden industrialist Walter Hubbard donated the tower and the surrounding park, which a grateful Meriden named after him. The tower is one of the highlights of the 1,800-acre (7.3 km2) park from its observation deck. Looking south one can observe Long Island Sound and on a clear day, the outline of Long Island itself. To the north, Southern Massachusetts Berkshire Hills come into view. Hubbard Park is on the National Register of Historic Places. bring lunch usually quiet and beautiful in the fall.
