Story

Hubbard Park, located in the Hanging Hills of Connecticut, is a wooded, mountainous park located just outside the city center of Meriden, Connecticut. It comprises approximately 1800acre of carefully kept woodlands, streams, dramatic cliff faces, flower gardens, and the James Barry bandshell and picnic spots, as well as its showpiece, Mirror Lake. The park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.HistoryMost of the land was given to the town by Walter Hubbard, president of the Bradley & Hubbard Manufacturing Company. In his donation, the land was given outright, with the stipulation that everything connected with the park was to remain free of charge for the people of Meriden, and that no concessions for profit were ever allowed within the park area.Hubbard spent a great deal of time and energy creating the park. He personally spent between $400,000 and $500,000 to clear land, build roads, and construct Mirror Lake with the help of Frederick Law Olmsted, who is best known for designing New York City's Central Park. Hubbard built a tower on East Peak, known as Castle Craig, to resemble the towers built by the Turks along the Danube River in the 12th century.According to local folklore, Hubbard Park is said to be haunted by the ghostly presence of the Black Dog of the Hanging Hills (see Hanging Hills).

Wonderful park with a large, well maintained playground with a variety of equipment to suit toddlers to big kids. There's also an impressive stone observatory tower that you can hike to, or drive your car to the parking lot at the top of the large hill. (I strongly suggest driving if you have small kids - the hike is extra long for little legs!) The views are phenomenal on a clear day! I wish we had thought to pack a picnic.

First hike of the year with our puppy Nico, and my daughter. The day was perfect, Sunny, breezy, the park was amazing, with nice views. Everything you want to see (no wild life) fresh water, rocky steep mountain hills or more flat steady up hill trails to choose from! Can't wait to come back again😍

This park is so beautiful and with so much potential but mirror lake is filthy. The water is always an unhealthy murky green and full of trash. You can't see even a few inches into the water. I was visiting a few weeks ago and i really noticed how stunning this park really is otherwise. They have a lot of piled stone structures which are lovely. Water features such as a few fountains. The hiking paths are great and walking up to Castle Craig for that view is very much worth it. Beautiful healthy grass too. Really its just mirror lake. As i was walking around it i saw 2 fresh pieces of trash floating in the water as though someone finished their snack and tossed it right in on purpose.
