It is never a good experience to have a loved one in a hospital, and I have had this one in several. I have never found nicer, more understanding people to deal with in this type of facility, than Cedar Springs. Let me give them a shout -out.

Hospital discharged my grandson in emergent state, without stabilizing him. When I sent them a grievance, the only response I received was "we cannot confirm or deny that he was a patient". Unfortunately, this carless discharge affected his life very seriously. I only hope that they will be more diligent with other patients.

I could write a book's worth of reasons why this place is horrible. But instead I'm just going to say that the only reason this place hasn't shut down is because it's one of the two mental health facilities in the Colorado Springs area and kids need help. But this isn't a place where kids get help. I can't say much for the adult unit as I have no knowledge of what actually goes on in their stay. I do however know that there are nicer, more caring and knowledgable facilities in other states. Although there are a small handful of staff that care about what they're doing, I would say majority of the staff are very unprofessional. To say the least. It's hard for the patients to do anything about it because their the "crazy" ones in there. They overdo it with the meds. Often prescribing odd medications that don't directly treat the issues just so they can have you on something. (They give blood pressure and anti-seizure meds to "treat" anxiety & depression.) The environment is terrible. They treat adolescent patients more like juvenile delinquents instead of truly addressing the fact these kids aren't all bad. They come from broken families and bad situations, they need support and valuable insight, not a black and white behavior system. *Parents, I urge you even if you're desperate to help your kids, this place is not the answer. It may scare your kids into stopping the behaviors that got them there in the first place (temporarily, it depends on the kid) but it does not solve the underlying issues and can create new ones. It's an overall bad experience that many teenagers would describe as a living hell. Rightfully so.
