I went to this gas station yesterday and asked if they could provide cash back and if so how much - I was told $25 was the maximum. This morning I attempted to withdraw $25 while putting some gas in a friend's tank. The screen said the transaction was successful, and the cash drawer opened, but the clerk angrily scolded me and slammed the drawer shut stating that $20 was their cash back limit (at the time I assumed he had cancelled the whole transaction but now I'm not so sure). "Okay," I said, "no problem let me redo it so I can request twenty instead." At this point the clerk asked me again what I was purchasing. I said to him, "I would like these AA batteries, twenty on pump #9, and twenty back in cash." This seemed to confuse him further, but he told me to scan my card again to complete the transaction so I complied, while at the same time noticing he hadn't scanned the batteries. Naturally, I mentioned that he had forgotten the batteries - at this point he seemed helplessly flustered and aggravated, pointing behind me at the line saying "I have a lot of other customers, you are holding up the line." There was indeed quite a line built up behind me, so I replied, "okay so we just did the gas? No batteries, no cash?" His response was something succinct like "no, just gas." So I apologized for holding up the line and told him he should help his other customers. Mind you, there were a couple of snacks and drinks that I had intended to buy with the cash I had requested, but seeing as I didn't get the cash and was in a hurry myself I left them and the batteries behind. When I finally got home I checked the transaction history on my card, and to my dismay, the transaction that took place this morning at Chevron charged my account an even $40.00 - so the clerk hadn't cancelled my cash back request like he stated, but rather had allowed the transaction to go through, angrily closed the drawer what seemed like half a dozen times, and then shooed me away with no receipt. So why did I waste so much time writing this lengthy diatribe, which is seemingly unlikely to have any impact on my fate? Because I'm hoping that the manager I was just told to talk to tomorrow morning by whoever answered the phone will read this and try to rectify this unfortunate transaction error. I'm too poor for Irvine as it is, that $20 is like 42% of my current fortune, and I was really hoping I could buy some cigarettes and a milkshake for my wife with that $20...
