Had a wonderful experience in renewing my passport today. No one in line ahead of me and normally you need to make a reservation but their 2:30 reservation forgot their passport photos so I lucked out and filed my application in a matter of minutes. Be sure to bring a checkbook since they don't take credit cards. Friendly clerk to boot!

I am Andrew. I am fourteen years old. I was born and raised in the US. I attended All Saints Catholic School, which located across from the Puyallup City Hall. I witnessed this event: 8/3/16 @ 1:20pm: My mother arrived to the City Hall, and apologized to the clerk that she was 5 minutes late for her appointment. 1:23 pm: The clerk informed my mother that her name was not in the system. She did not have the appointment to renew passports for her children. 1:24 pm: My mother showed the clerk the list of documents requirements with the date and time of the appointment printed on it. 1:25 pm: The clerk informed my mother that she was late for her appointment, and in order to process four applications she would need to spend at least 30 minutes. The clerk was expecting an appointment at 1:45. Therefore, she suggested that my mother should make an appointment for another time. 1:27 pm: My father raised his voice, and asked “how many systems are there?” 1:28 pm: Another clerk walked up the front desk and told my father that they have the right to refuse service to anyone. She also raised her voice stated that we should leave and go to Bonney Lake location instead. She said “getting the passport is a PREVILEDGE,” and repeatedly told us to go elsewhere. 1:29 pm: My father demanded to speak o her supervisor. 1:30 pm: My father explained the situation to the gentleman (the supervisor?). The gentleman told my father that the service they offer “is a privilege, and not a right.” Since there was a heated situation already, “They cannot provide the service to us!” 1:32 pm: My mother in her shaky voice summarized the event to the gentleman. We went to their office 2 weeks ago, and was turned away because we did not have the appointment. She pleaded that my father had to take time from work to attend these appointments. For them to not provide the service to us because my father was “disrespectful” was unreasonable. 1:35 pm: The gentleman and the clerk walked away 1:36 pm: They came back and agreed to process our paper works with the condition that we have to “act respectfully” I sat there and contemplating the words “rights” and “privileges.” Although I disagreed with my father on how he handled the situation, but I understood his frustration and anger. I wonder if “privileges” would come easier and more pleasant for him if he is CAUCasian. This event cured my “color blind” condition; for the first time in my life, I am painfully aware that I AM A PERSON OF COLOR.
