You'll Feel Better Here

Story

Who We Are:

Our vision was to not only be your neighborhood veterinarian, but to set an example for outstanding veterinary practice in our community. We're a family-owned and operated clinic, and we're bringing back a level of patient care and client service that you don't see enough of these days. We provide the highest quality comprehensive care for your pet and treat them as if they are our own ... like family.

We also think it's important to be proactive. That means continuing to educate ourselves and our clients, so together we can give your pet the best possible quality of life. It also means we'll be calling to check in after an appointment, a surgery, or just because. Everyone here is committed to you and your pet. That's why we can confidently say: you'll feel better here.

Dr. Shook is a full-time veterinarian and a co-owner, along with her sister, Jenn Shook. She began working at Whetstone Point Inner Harbor Veterinary Hospital in 2003. In 2005 she pursued a lifelong dream when she and her sister purchased the clinic and renamed it CityPets Veterinary Care & Wellness. She enjoys living in Baltimore with her cat Mischief and dog Opie. If you see Dr. Shook and Opie walking around the neighborhood (not like you could miss a Great Dane!), stop by and say hi.

Dr. Shook cared for our dog for about 5-6 years. She and her staff were friendly and competent, and we appreciated the convenience of having them in the neighborhood. However I wish I had shopped around and asked more forward-thinking questions before settling in as a regular client. Over the years, Dr. Shook identified several age-related conditions in my senior dog (heart murmur, skin growths, etc), that I preferred to monitor rather than pursue intensive diagnostic workup or treatment for. My goal (as a physician myself), was to keep my dog as happy as possible in her older years with solid preventative care but not to pursue specialty testing that would not change outcomes (and would be stressful for my anxious rescue dog). Dr. Shook did not always seem to agree with this philosophy, and although she did not push us, this seemed to create distance as our dog approached end of life. When concerning symptoms developed, I tried for the first time to make an urgent appointment, and was told we could not be seen for weeks. They directed me to Everhart, which was a drive, but we got right in and a very kind vet (but nevertheless a stranger), was the one who told me my dog was developing kidney failure, and talked me through the testing and treatment options. Once stabilized, we enjoyed a few more months of relative normalcy before worsening again, and now knowing the end was near, I called City pets during business hours to seek a brief visit for palliative treatments (nausea medicine and fluids), to see if there was any way to bring back an appetite before making the tough decision about end of life. They again turned me away and said because something else could be going on we had to go to the Pet ER, as she may need “imaging or other testing” (which I did not want). Fortunately, although after a long drive and stressful wait for my dog, we lucked out with a very compassionate pet ER vet in Columbia. She quickly drew labs, found that despite the specialty diet, things had progressed to end stage, and set me up with everything I needed to essentially provide dog hospice care at home. My dog had a few good days left, and I am so grateful for that. When her appetite left for good, I knew it was time. I called City Pets once more to ask about home euthanasia. But they do not provide that service. We were given contact information for a yet a third vet service that makes house calls. And a stranger came to euthanize our dog. In the end, I wished I had done my homework before choosing City Pets. Once we feel ready to welcome another dog, I will work to find a veterinarian who I can partner with and importantly can provide support for end of life care. I promised myself and my dog no stressful ER situations, and in the end, I couldn’t keep that promise. Despite my “human” medical training, I needed a vet ally, and as a sad and grieving pet owner, needed guidance through that difficult time. Perhaps, as with humans, this type of care is a vanishing commodity. And I realize it was never going to be easy saying goodbye to my companion of 13 years, but that was not the end of life I had hoped for.

My 12-year old golden retriever was seen by Dr. Shook and Amanda for ear problem. The care was extra-ordinary. It was prompt, loving and caring. Follow-up call next day was additonal pleasant experience.

I appreciate how kind and caring Dr Shook and her team are but I think the real endorsement comes from Homer and Emma who always wagged their tales on their way to and once we got to City Pets. Our new puppy, Sadie seems to feel the same way. The City Pets team is very professional, friendly and provides wonderful care to my furry family members.

Dr. Shook and her staff have been taking care of my cat for about 12 years. They have all been wonderful and provided great care for him. They are gentle, attentive, and understanding to a cat who sometimes does not appreciate the medical care he needs. I can strongly recommend City Pets.
