If you mail your Business Personal Property Tax Return near the deadline, be sure to have the U.S. postal service stamp your postmark. I've been preparing and mailing property tax returns for 27 years and have never had a county reject my metered mail. This year, my metered date was March 31 and the tax assessor's office said they received it on April 2. Since I didn't have the post office stamp my metered mail, they did not accept my postmark. Rather than fining us 10% as the tax return indicates is the penalty for late filing, they assessed the same indicated value as the previous year which is a 63% penalty in my case. I feel this was grossly unfair, but they sited Georgia code that allows them to do this. They say their hands are tied. Hmmmmmm......I wonder............
